L.S.D. REXXX - The Cosmic Forces of Creation · Ever Rat
L.S.D. REXXX main man Ulysses D. Rexxx is quoted on the J-card as having said: "[I] feel as though our work will lead to the destruction of all intelligent life..." The only way this Pop- Thrash could destroy anything is by boring it to oblivion. And, way to steal from (sample?) ZODIAC MINDWARP, Mr. Rexxx. Real hooky and sugar-coated. Maybe you can stand that - I can't. - 5 - <Ray> **MC7**

LAB RAT - Angles · DEMO
I have no idea what this is supposed to be. It's way too Ambient for Noise. I guess that's it, this is Ambient, uhh Sound. Yeah, I'll go with that. The J-card calls it a "sonic landscape." Whatever. Weird, definitely weird. - 4 - <Ray> **MC8**

LABRAT - Ruining it for Everyone · Century Media
What we have here is a big, noisy, confused, easily forgettable, clusterfuck mess. I should've known that it would suck because the maggot-dick queer motherfuckers at Terrorizer really liked it, and whenever the clueless faggot dorks at Terrorizer really like something that just means its a big, noisy, confused, easily forgettable, clusterfuck mess. You see, the inbred dicklicking fuckbags at Terrorizer mistake anything they don't comprehend as genius, because they're a bunch of stupid limey sword-swallowing semen bandits. In fact, in that capacity, Terrorizer magazine is a pretty useful tool. You just skim through and see whatever the retarded, shit-for-brains, fuckface cum-stains gave a good review, and then avoid that at all costs like you would their AIDS-infected mothers' freshly felched assholes. So, I guess the worthless, douchebag, walking abortions at Terrorizer aren't such pillow-biting tampons after all. - 1 - <Jack>

LABYRINTH - Return to Heaven Denied · Metal Blade
Man, do these dudes ever want to be HELLOWEEN. It’s weird that the Metal world has gone all the way back around to that, but it’s a fuck of a lot better than every dickhead aping KORN, so I’m all for it. And really LABYRINTH do a pretty convincing job. The playing is excellent, the songs are all pretty catchy, and are furiously energetic. - 8.75 - <Ray> **MC12**

LABYRINTH - Timeless Crime EP · Metal Blade
I have a question: Why bother to make something a hidden bonus track (such as the SANCTUARY cover on this EP) if you're going to mention it all over the place anyway? It's practically the first thing they mention in the press release. Okay, who cares? The LABYRINTH version of Power Metal is interesting. The drums are generally kept very fast, there are strange flourishes that sound like a Hammond Organ, and the technical skill displayed here is nothing short of breathtaking. They even do a good job on that "hidden" SANCTUARY cover. But for all that, this still somehow falls short. - 7.75 - <Ray>

LABYRINTH - Sons of Thunder · Metal Blade
With song titles such as "Save Me," "Love," and "I Feel You," I was pretty sure this would suck ball-bag. I guess "suck" is a little harsh, though, because if there is one thing that LABYRINTH does not do, it's suck. In fact, these guys are extremely talanted, but that alone doesn't make me like a band. Although I almost do in this case. If it just weren't for the singning, which I'm sure would sound right at home on a DESTINY'S CHILD album, but is way too wimpy for any type of a serious Metal release. I mean, this might as well be WHITESNAKE with good drums. I suppose that these guys are unconcerned with being heavy and I should rate this on their skill level alone. Well, that would make this a ten, I guess, but then again, looking at things like that might make JOURNEY a great band, too. But I could deal with the light-weight, but technically magnificent, music if not for these totally sappy vocals. - 7 - <Ray>

LABYRINTH - Labyrinth · Century Media
If I could get past the pussified vocals, which even the guys in JOURNEY would have to admit sound gay, and the questionable lyrics, this would be awesome. Musically, as with the band's previous albums (on Metal Blade), this is untouchable Power Metal along the lines of the best of HELLOWEEN, and is so flawless that I can almost tune out the vocals. Almost. - 7.25 - <Ray>

LACHRYMA CHRISTI - In Madness I Wander · DEMO
When they stick to the mid-paced stuff and the raw vocals, this Black / Doom / Death is cool. But there is too much failed experimentation for it to be 100% awesome. Pretty close, though. - 8 - <Ray> **MC11**

LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE - ...and the Wings Embraced Us · DEMO(CD)
Depressing, suicidal Doom/Death. The production is excellent, the playing near perfection, the vocals deadly and mournful, the mood dismal. In other words, this is everything that Doom should be, but be warned that the despondency this music creates is not easily gotten rid of. - 9.5 - <Ray> **MC10**

LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE - Memorandum · Napalm
Holy Hell, does this band ever want to be MY DYING BRIDE. But, like the very "artsy Black Metal" version of the Doom legends. The weird part about that is that Black Metal is utterly unconcerned with being "heavy," and yet, that is the primary concern of Doom. Or at least it should be. And so, here we have a band at odds with itself. On the one hand, they're trying to use some Black Metal techniques (speed picking, repetition, simplistic keyboards, screechy vocals) to evoke gloom, but they also attempt to create similar feelings by incorporating female vocals, use of nothing but keyboards, and slower, more crushing guitars. These different approaches often grate against each other, but sometimes it does work pretty well for them. However, I'm tempted to say that sometimes they get lucky, because there are times when I can't help but think they're utterly clueless, and just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. The idea of combining cackled Black Metal vocals with the "dreamy," smooth male vocals, for example, is terrible, and only outdone in insanity when, later in the same song ("The Crown of Leaving") these "artists" one-up themselves by putting fairly good female vocals on top of the normal Black Metal screams. Bad idea. It's not like this is the worst thing I've ever heard, though. In fact, there is a lot of good stuff here, but the throwing together of so many different styles, both vocally and musically, is at the very least distracting. I mean, a single song might go from fast, new wave Black Metal, to exclusively atmospheric keyboards, to acoustic guitars with pretty female vocals, to MDB kind of Doom heaviness, back to fast Black Metal, with three simultaneous vocal tracks, and no logical transitions form one style to the next. If perfected, this hybridization, this Black Doom, if you will, could be a very powerful force. At present, it's too schizophrenic to pose much of a serious threat. - 7.75 - <Ray>

LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE - Burning: A Wish · Napalm
Jettisoning their Black Metal influences, L.P. has returned with a gloomy album that recalls MY DYING BRIDE's more mellow moments, with perhaps just a touch of recent KATATONIA. So, while not exactly heavy, this is pretty damn good, despite a couple moments when things drag on a tiny bit too long. - 8.25 - <Ray>

LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE - Fall, I Will Follow · Napalm
Not as instantly likable as their previous morose masterpiece, Burning: A Wish, for two reasons. One, the harsh, discordant vocals that have become less prominent with each release are totally gone, and two, tracks like "For Bad Times" and "Liquid" have a disgusting Bar Rock groove to them. Other than that, this band still know how to tug at a heart string. The music is comprised of simple, catchy melodies, and the vocals are as always, total Aaron from MY DYING BRIDE worship. For many an extreme music patron, I'd assume that this band's influences may be a little too worn on their sleeves, or the overall feel of the record a bit too drenched in sappiness, but somehow they strike a chord with me. When a little Gothic Metal romanticism is called for, LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE still beckon me clamorously. - 9.25 - <Jack>

LACRIMAS PROFUNDERE - Ave End · Napalm
When music is your life, it's sadder when a band dies than when a person does. Alas the day, everything I loved about this band is gone without a trace. Their Metal aesthetic, which faded more and more with each subsequent release, is now completely absent. They no longer worship KATATONIA. Now they sound more like the Goth band from that Dead Man on Campus movie. Every song sounds like "My Words and My Sperm." They still have fleeting moments of melancholy, but overall, the arrangements are just too commercial to enjoy. Rest in peace. - 5.25 - <Jack>

LACRIMOSA - Fassade · Nuclear Blast
When they try to keep things ominous and dark, this Goth Rock band isn't all that terrible. But, of course, they feel the need to branch out into far more light and friendly realms, and those frequent excursions are embarrassingly bad, like a horrible German version of the worst of Japanese Pop. And I really don't give a good god damn if LACRIMOSA has sold a million records or not. As a general rule, the more albums a band sells, the more that band sucks ass. Also, it might be just on my review copy, but all or most of the songs have extremely strange quick fade-outs instead of any normal kind of endings... - 3 - <Ray>

LACUNA COIL - Lacuna Coil EP · Century Media
Unemotional "dark," Gothy Rock, I guess, with female vox. - 7 - <Ray> **MC11** - "Last Second Additions"

LACUNA COIL - In a Reverie · Century Media
After not liking their debut EP, this was a pleasant surprise. It’s pretty convincing "dark and moody" Hard Rock / Metal with a female singer. Not a tenth as heavy or well-sung as LEFT HAND SOLUTION, and not a tenth as flat out cool as was FEAR OF GOD, but I don’t suppose they’re trying to accomplish any of the above. So it’s all pretty lightweight, but not bad. - 8 - <Ray> **MC12**

LACUNA COIL - Unleashed Memories · Century Media
More Goth Rock / Metal, which comes as no surprise. But, I will say that I think more "Metal" influence is injected this time, and I'm not sure that I recall Cristina's vocals being quite this strong. Admittedly, I didn't go back and listen to their other stuff before reviewing this (it's probably the thing to do, but with all the reviews this in this issue, I just didn't have the necessary time), but I think this may be their best work so far. - 8.25 - <Ray>

LAKE OF TEARS - Greater Art · Black Mark
The name Mathias Lodmalm is all over the place on here, so guess what. Yep, they sound like CEMETARY. This album was recorded at Sunlight, apparently to prove that you can get a different sound out of that studio. I like it, and if you like Gothy, melodic, Doom-Rock, Death Metal, then you will, too! - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC9**

LAKE OF TEARS - Headstones · Black Mark
This has a bit more individual identity than had Greater Art, but is certainly in that same style. Melancholic Death Rock, I suppose. It's interesting, but the lack of growls may put some off, but I like the vocals, and Daniel can get a little raw when he so desires. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC9**

LAMB OF GOD - New American Gospel · Metal Blade
It's Relapse-Core on Metal Blade! An excellent drummer! He really adds a lot to this band. The vocalist has the evil, tormented, COALESCE-style throaty screams; and the music ranges from Thrashy to groove to all out chaos. There are even some HATEBREED-style mosh parts to get the head banging. I bet this group rages live. If you're into the merging of Hardcore foundations with various other styles of extreme music then this is right up your alley. I found it very easy to get into. - 9.5 - <Jack>

LAMENTATIONS - 1993 · DEMO
Despite the ultra muddy sound, this is great. Very heavy Death. If this had any sound quality, it would be incredible. Perhaps it's just my copy that's messed up. - 8 - <Ray> **MC8**

LANA LANE - Secrets of Astrology · SPV / LMP
Progressive "Symphonic" Hard Rock, with a chick singer. Oh, great... The headache I got from listening to this is just indescribable. - 1.5 - <Ray>

LANDFILL - Face the Insanity · DEMO
The Industrial nature of this band is emphasized by their use of a drum machine, which is fine. But the thin production doesn't help any, and the vocals are mixed too high. This just doesn't do much for me. It's really the fault of the production, rather than the songs - this kind of style needs a great production, period. A studio and budget would probably yield a vastly superior result with the same songs. - 7.75 - <Ray> **MC8**

LANDFILL - Extinction is Mandatory · Wild Rags
Ahh, another Industrial / Metal crossover. Cool. The problem of their demo, namely bad production, has been more than solved here, leaving, well, no problems. If you like it heavy, mostly slow, and the use of a drum machine, then this is it! If not, then open up the ol' brain, okay? - 8.75 - <Ray> **MC9**

LANDSCAPES - Timegist · DEMO (CD)
To be fair, this Brazilian 6-piece are all extremely accomplished musicians and each of the 3 songs on this disc feature some very complex arrangements, solos, etc. But please, oh please, loose the QUEENSRYCHE wannabe vocals, ‘cause they’re suckin’ big time. Thin production makes this a long, long, very long listening experience, in the bad way. - 4 - <Brainhammer> <Ray> **MC12**

LARD - Pure Chewing Satisfaction · Alternative Tentacles
It’s difficult to know where to start with this one. LARD’s singer, the infamous Jello Biafra, is a Punk legend thanks to his old band DEAD KENNEDYS, and his label, Alternative Tentacles. Plus he successfully defended freedom of speech a few years back. Jello’s lyrics are satirical and sociopolitical. And interesting. As are the liner notes, cut and pasted "D.I.Y." style every which way inside the thick CD booklet. Check out the interview with him elsewhere in this issue for more on Mr. Biafra. The band is MINISTRY (not just like them - it is them), but a revved up, Thrashier, heavier MINISTRY. Apparently Al saves his good riffs for LARD. I hope we won’t have to wait seven years for their next album! - 9.5 - <Ray> **MC11**

LARVA - Bluenothing · Demonosound
I'm not exactly sure what to say about this one. There is a lot of atmosphere, some acoustic guitar, and some with distortion, as well as keyboards, drums, and occasional chanting voices. It's almost like some weird combination of Ambient and Folk, but sometimes it's fairly Doomy, too. That's not everything. LARVA seem compelled to stay beyond description, trying their hand at many different styles, and somehow making them their own. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC10**

LAS CRUCES - S.O.L. · Brainticket
Groove-Doom. If they had a better bassist, I would be more reminded of BLACK SABBATH, but who could really live up to Geezer? The vocals are thicker and slightly lower-pitched than I was expecting, which is great news to me. And lyrics like "I carve my lust into your flesh/ You writhe in pain," are certainly a nice touch. - 8.75 - <Ray> **MC10**

LAST CHAPTER - The Living Waters · Brainticket
If you like Doom in the style of CANDLEMASS or more exactly SOLITUDE AETURNUS, then don’t hesitate to buy this. It’s basically the same style as much of S.A.’s Downfall LP (which got a 10 last ish.), and nearly as good (although certainly not as adventurous). Robert Lowe even lends his amazing vocal talents to this slab of melodic heaviness. - 9 - <Ray> **MC11**

THE LAST DROP - Where Were Your Living One Year from Now? · TMC
I guess that these retro-shitheads changed their name from SHALLOW to THE LAST DROP to make sure that their band name was just as lame and derivative as they are musically. Not that SHALLOW was any better. - 3 - <Ray>

LAST WAR - Condemned for Annihilation · DEMO
Great intro, followed by a speedy Death assault. Generally cool songs, but nothing really stands out. The clear production helps, but something seems to be missing. - 7.75 - <Ray> **MC8**

LATHEBRA - Angels’ Twilight Odes · DEMO
Very professionally recorded and packaged Gothic Black Metal. They have quite a lot of energy and keep things eerie & moody at all times, as they should. - 8 - <Ray> **MC11**

LATIMER - World's Portable EP · World Domination
I suppose this isn't too bad. It's kind of strange guitar-driven Alternative. Bunch of weird stuff goin' on in the songs, but not enough to always be interesting, and they play each riff to utter death. Maybe if the songs were a minute long it'd be better. - 7.25 - <Ray> **MC9**

LATIMER - Lp Title · World Domination
As I already didn't like the length of the songs (see above review), listening to more of them didn't help, but sometimes these guys just get inspired for a few seconds at a time. The muse hits them hard for like 15 seconds, then they are left muse-less again for awhile. All told, not bad, and it's an improvement from the EP, so they are progressing. Two more albums and these guys may just be really good. - 7.75 - <Ray> **MC9**

LAUGHING DEAD - Demo 1990 · DEMO
LAUGHING DEAD are a Thrash band, no great leaps in imagination here. But I’ll give them this much: I like it. This is a solid effort. It was co-produced by Gary Holt of EXODUS and therefore ends up sounding a bit more like EXODUS than it should. However this is almost completely corrected by the second song. This band shows a lot of talent and promise. They also have the best logo in the known world (this week), I wish I had some stickers like it! - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC4**

LAUGHING DOG - Laughing Dog · DEMO
Just because I don’t often comment on the production of demos doesn’t mean that I don’t care, but rather, that I understand that not everyone has enough cash to pay for studio time. But sometimes, like now, I do wish for a better sound. I know that L.D. are really energetic Death / Grind with both screechy and growled vox, but it’s sort of tough to say a lot more than that. I hear some cool stuff going on, but I think that even a "live to jam box" recording would be an improvement. - 7.5 - <Ray> **MC11**

LAWNMOWER DETH - Ohh Crikey, It's.../ Kids in America · Relativity/ Earache
First of all, this CD (and the tape, too) contains both the Ohh Crikey, It's... LP and the Kids in America EP, as well as nine bonus tracks that are not available anywhere else, seven of which are live versions of songs from the LP. These guys cover a hell of a lot of ground here. All the way from extreme Thrashcore to the very danceable "Kids in America (De La Deth Mix)," which is a KIM WILDE cover. However, they also do a Thrash version of that song. A lot of comparisons have been made between this band and S.O.D. and they are somewhat accurate, but LAWNMOWER DETH have a better sense of humor and they are way, way more diverse than S.O.D. ever was, although just as fast. They even... uhh, "cover" M.O.D.'s "Bushwackateas," although they call it "F.A.T. (Fascist and Tubby)" -the lyrics are different, but the music's the same. From the live version (Which is also on this album), you can tell they don't much care for Billy Milano. They also do an excellent job covering MOTÖRHEAD's classic "Motörhead." All things considered, this 35 song release (well over an hour) is more than worth the money. Just remember, it's not too serious, you are supposed to be having fun with this one. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC6**

LAWNMOWER DETH - Billy · Earache
Umm, this is weird. It's so happy, everything is upbeat and pleasant. A lot of this sounds like some odd New Wave band. I know they're supposed to not be too serious, but this is not exactly what I expected from this band. And I don't exactly like it, either, except for their touching rendition of "Purple Haze." - 7 - <Ray> **MC8**

LE SCRAWL - Too Short to Ignore · Life Is Abuse
Hey, it’s Hardcore, Punk and Grind... - 1 - <Jack>

LE SCRAWL - Eager to Please · Life Is Abuse
...mixed with Ska, Jazz, Lounge, and Prog! - 1 - <Jack>

LEAD - Lead · DEMO
The raw production lends itself to a heavy sound, and that's exactly what this Industrial band is about: Heavy. Their cover of the EURYTHMICS "Here Comes the Rain Again" transforms the track into a monstrous nightmare. Excellent. - 9 - <Ray> **MC9**

LEAD - Lead · DEMO
Heavy, intense, brutal Death Metal. Good recording and passible packaging. What more do you need to know? - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC12**

LEASH LAW - Dogface · Black Lotus
Power Metal. - 1 - <Jack>

LEAVES EYES - Lovelorn · Napalm
This is that twat from THEATRE OF TRAGEDY's new band. I admit, she does have a good voice. I love the first two THEATRE OF TRAGEDY albums, and I recently heard the song she does with CRADLE OF FILTH and it's pretty fucking cool. The problem here is that there is no brutal male voice to offset her vocals and make them more dynamic. In other words, there is no Raymond Rohonyi or Dani Filth to bail her ass out. Her new meal ticket, ATROCITY's Alex Krull, does lend some backing vocals, but his voice is more feminine than hers these days. Sorry, I can't feel this. I was born with a sack. - 4.5 - <Jack>

LEAVES’ EYES - Vinland Saga · Napalm
How far this once mesmerizing Doom mistress has fallen. It appears she’s more content than ever to leave the glory days of THEATRE OF TRAGEDY behind. It’s not like I cared for LEAVES’ EYES’ first album, but at least it was still in the vicinity of Doom. The shit isn’t even remotely gloomy anymore. Upbeat Pop Metal with lyrical content equivalent to bad teenage poetry. This sounds ready for rotation on your local Pop station, the one that plays GWEN STEFANI eight times on a three-hour loop. Speaking of that racetraitor cunt, I wonder at this rate how long it will be before we can expect Liv’s debut R&B venture? - 2 - <Jack>

LEAVES’ EYES - Elegy · Napalm
A single/EP for what the band apparently feels is the big hit from Vinland Saga. That’s pretty sad considering it sounds like TIFFANY playing her high school reunion. It contains some non-album bonus material, but if you’ve read my LP review, you know I give less than a shit. - 2 - <Jack>

LECHEROUS NOCTURNE · demo
Here we have an unrelenting, darkened brew of fast and brutal Death Metal with such ferocious power it brings to mind the pleasant memories of works by VITAL REMAINS, IMMOLATION, and PESSIMIST. The only thing holding them back is the common hindrance of the music not being memorable. The initial reaction is a dropped jaw, but even after several spins nothing sticks. Nevertheless, LECHEROUS NOCTURNE has the vocalist, the drummer, and all the dazzling technical ability in the world to create something monumentally exceptional in the near future. - 8.75 - <Jack>
www.lecherousnocturne.com

LEFT HAND SOLUTION - Fevered · Nuclear Blast
PARADISE LOST / CEMETARY kind of memorable, melodic, atmospheric Doom/Goth/Rock/Metal (until the much faster, weird last track), with a female singer who can actually get the job done. Now if only drummer/main man Erik would shut the fuck up and let her deliver the bads without his horrible (and thankfully not too frequent) backing vox, and never again overdrive her voice (even if it is only for a few lines in one song, it’s insane). You write great riffs and kick ass on the drums, pal, but you can’t do it all! Things that kept this from a 10: Erik’s queer backing vocals (and lead vocals in the aforementioned last track), the few lines in track 8 where the vox are overdriven, and the sameness of the songs - I thought I was hearing the same track over again a couple times, but what a great track it is! - 9 - <Ray> **MC11**

LEGION - Legion · DEMO
Totally bestial vocals, and standard Death Metal music. Not bad, and certainly well played, but I would appreciate something new. I've heard all this before. There are heavier, faster, slower, more evil, more extreme in any way, bands out there, so what is the contribution that LEGION makes? I don't know. But all that's being way too mean to them. Really they are a talented bunch, and this is a good demo, but they could add a hint of originality and stand out from the massive Death crowd. Just an idea, guys. I'm honestly glad to hear some Death bands from Indiana, so I shouldn't really complain. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC8**

LEGION - Legion · DEMO
I got 4 new songs (on 2 separate tapes) from LEGION’s main man, Dave Dalton, so I’m not sure if they were for a new demo (I think so), or what, but I’m impressed. These songs are all massively heavy slabs of Death, that’ll crush you where you stand. But that might not even be the best part. The production and mix are super thick, which of course adds to the overpowering weight of the somehow catchy music. But all that probably takes a back seat to the awesome vocals. They’re raw and low, but fairly understandable (for me at least), and possess an individual sound. That’s what really puts LEGION over the top. - 9.75 - <Ray> **MC12**

LEGION - Conqueror · Dark Horizon
I think that this CD has the four tracks from the two tapes that I reviewed last issue, two new cuts, plus "Infested Earth" from their Blissful Misery demo, and "Curtains" from their Legion demo. It's great to have this stuff on CD, even though the mastering process has left the drums sounding a little weird in some places, and the demo tracks are a real plus for me. Conqueror is absolutely excellent 100% true Death Metal. From of all places, right here in Indiana! - 9.5 - <Ray>

THE LEGION - s/t · demo
An 8-song CDR of jeans-with-the-ass-cut-out Rock ‘n’ Roll from a bunch of dumb fucks. "I’m an outlaw..." Bitch, get home to mommy and daddy before you get put on time-out and sent to bed without dessert. MOTLEY CRUE is listed as the band’s biggest influence? MOTLEY CRUE sounds like DEEDS OF FLESH compared to this Cock Rock extravaganza. No one should aspire to play bottom feeder Bar Rock, and by the way, there are 70 fucking bands called LEGION already, you stupid cum stains. - 1 - <Jack>
www.geocities.com/legions79

LELIO PADOVANI - Unknown Evolution · demo
All-instrumental Rock wankery. Two minutes into track one and I’ve had enough. - 2.5 - <Jack>

LEMMING PROJECT - Hate and Despise · Century Media
Euro Death Metal at its best. With all the generic crap out there, here comes another in a series of excellent German Death Metal bands. Although the music is your basic Death, full of Blast beats, this band writes lyrics in the "New Age" style. No more repeated themes of gore and dismemberment. Instead, LEMMING PROJECT concentrates on writing intelligent lyrics. With bands like this, Germany may eclipse Sweden as the Death capitol. - 8 - <Gerry> **MC8**

LEMONHEADS - Creator · Taang!
They sample BLACK SABBATH and cover SUZANNE VEGA. What more do you want to know? Fifteen songs on the CD, plus a short interview. This is really the first time that I've heard them, and actually, this is pretty good. Alternative, I suppose. Pretty guitar oriented, and certainly catchy. The more I hear this, the more I like it. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC8**

LENNON - 5:30 Saturday Morning · Arista
You'd think that an album that starts out with a songs called "Property of Goatfucker" would have to be awesome, right? Not exactly. Althought I will admit that it's not too bad, and Lennon herself is hotter than the deepest pits of Hell. Musically, this never reaches the Metal intensity that the press release would have you believe, but that's okay, because it never goes anywhere close to the trendy cesspool of "Nu-Metal," either. However, there are some sort of "electronic" elements here and there, that at times make this gloomy Metalized Rock remind me a little of DANZIG's Danzig 4, or maybe even Blackacidevil. Sometimes moody, sometimes aggressive, but almost never bad. And I'm not just saying that because I really want to fuck this chick, either (although I do). - 8 - <Ray>

LEPRA - Lepra · DEMO
The intensity is certainly there - these 12 songs are definitely brutal - and there are some flourishes here and there, such as the tortured wail at the end of the first track, that serve to separate LEPRA from the Death herd. In short, LEPRA are standard Death Metal, but they're fucking good at it. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC10**

LEPROSY - Depressive · DEMO
Their primitive sound and screechy vocals leave me completely nonplused. Not horrible, but not very interesting. - 6 - <Ray> **MC9**

LEPROSY - The Same Routine · DEMO
While a distinct improvement over Depressive, this still doesn't do much for me. However, it is a bit heavier, and the songs are more interesting. This demo is pretty old, but does show some promise. Perhaps by now they've got some newer material recorded. - 7.5 - <Ray> **MC9**

LESS THAN JAKE - Crash Course in Being an Asshole · Rhetoric
Here's a trio of covers from this fun Punk band. I have never heard of LESS THAN JAKE before, but they sure as Hell add a lot of energy to these old dogs, and seem to be very talented musicians. And of course Rhetoric can be counted on to always provide their bands with interesting record sleeves, this one being in full color. Hopefully I will be hearing more from this interesting band soon. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC10**

LESTREGUS NOSFERATUS - Oh Come All Ye Faithful... · DEMO
These guys play a sort of Black Death not too far removed from DEICIDE, but not with as much intensity, although perhaps more musical integrity. Unfortunately, the songs are sometimes a bit too complex for their own good, making them not as heavy as they could be, and also not as memorable. Still, an impressive demo, right down to the sound and packaging. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC9**

LETHAL COMPULSION - Prophecies · DEMO
Great sound. Everything sounds super, but like I keep saying, there are about a billion Death bands, and if you're going to add yourself to that number, a little something to make you stand out would be a good idea. L.C. hint at originality and in fact they're better than a lot of bands. They have a few interesting ideas, not the least important of which is more than one vocal style, all of which sound evil. I appreciate, and applaud, the effort. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC8**

LETHAL FURY - Chronic State · DEMO
This demo has an interesting b/w cover that sports what appears to be a hand colored logo, two pictures, a thanks list and the lyrics to all three songs. Now then, about those songs: Thrash or Speed Metal. Kinda reminds me of EXODUS or other early Thrash bands with a somewhat melodic singer. The production is better than average, but the vox are mixed too high. However, the production and mix are acceptable, as are the songs. Unfortunately, nothing really stands out. Perhaps with a little more experience and a better studio... - 7.5 - <Ray> **MC6**

LETHAL FURY - The Right to Remain Violent · DEMO
The track "Feel My Steel" may have the funniest lyrics I've ever read. Too bad they're supposed to be serious, I guess. I thought humanity was beyond that level of banality. Guess not. The rest of the tape is better, slightly interesting Thrash, but like their last demo, nothing really grabs me, at least not in a good way. - 7.5 - <Ray> **MC8**

LEVEL - In the Absence of the Sacred EP · label unknown
The only riffs that work on this EP are the "rumbling tank" kinds of things and anybody can do that shit. They've got a singer who probably split most of his time in high school between pumping iron and looking at himself in the mirror growling "Yeee-aaaaaahhh" like James Hetfield / Gene Simmons. The occasional slow, "dreamy" parts sound like Seattle sludge bands' slow "dreamy" parts, and the heavier moments are reminiscent of GRETA, maybe, or other plodding Heavy-Rock bands I ignore. - 5 - <J.J.> **MC9**

LEVEL SIX - On the Inside · demo
From everything I’d heard about these guys, I was expecting this to suck like KORN. Actually, it sucks more like a band who have listened to CHEVELLE and QUEENSRYCHE exclusively for the last 15 years. A weird surprise but in no way a pleasant one. - 2 - <Jack>

LEVIATHAN - Tentacles of Whorror · Moribund
You know, Metal Curse could do a whole print issue just on LEVIATHAN. It would be a one-page interview followed by a review of all five million albums, split albums and demos Wrest has ever released. Well, not quite five million but San Francisco’s LEVIATHAN has released a whole shit-load of material over the last two years that it sure seems like it. Incidentally, this album hit streets almost a month or so after the CREBAIN / LEVIATHAN split CD. I don’t know how Wrest does it but he somehow manages to give each release a different spin. Unlike previous releases, Tentacles of Whorror sounds a lot like a soundtrack. The way this album flows, it seems to have a distinct direction and tone. The further in you get, the more twisted and weird this album becomes. You start with harsh, abrasive Black Metal and gradually, the music becomes more and more ambient and experimental. It almost sounds ritualistic by the end. If a journey into the darkest parts of your psyche had a musical score, Tentacles of Whorror would probably be it. - 9.75 - <Ychoril>

LIAR OF GOLGOTHA - Vendetta EP · Cryonics
This band's thick Black Metal sound seems to be as much influenced by CELTIC FROST as by EMPEROR, although their use of keyboards is generally kept very basic and simple, but effective nonetheless. The meatier guitar tone and quality production really sets these blasphemers apart from the rest of the dark legions, as does their somewhat complex arrangements and obvious skill, which in some ways reminds me of DISSECTION. Hopefully we'll be hearing a full-length effort soon. - 9.5 - <Ray> **MC10**

LIERS IN WAIT - Spiritually Uncontrolled Art EP · Dolores
Speedy and brutal Death, once again recorded at Sunlight. LIERS have a fairly unique sound, though. This five song EP is pretty straight forward, but occasionally they throw in something unexpected: keyboards, for example. The instrumental "Gateways" is fuckin' classic. What more can I say? Outstanding. - 9.25 - <Ray> **MC7**

LIERS IN WAIT - Spiritually Uncontrolled Art · Black Sun
Originally released in 1992, this EP is every bit as intense and unrelenting now as it was then. When I initially reviewed this, back in Metal Curse #7, I said it was classic Death Metal, and it has certainly stood the test of time. The improved layout is a nice addition, but not enough reason to buy a second copy if you have the first pressing. - 9.25 - <Ray> **MC10**

LIFE - Life · DEMO
If you look at their logo upside-down, it says "death." Uhh, yeah. This Death Metal band plays the popular fast and brutal style, and they do a good job. There are only three songs here, but that's enough to show what this band's about. - 8 - <Ray> **MC8**

LIFE OF AGONY - River Runs Red · Roadrunner
Not surprisingly, these guys sound somewhat like TYPE O NEGATIVE, but not too much. A little more Hardcore, I guess. Anyway, if you can get past the serious repetition of some lyrics, this is a great album. I have a little trouble with overly repetitive lyrics, myself, but I guess I'll give 'em a break, since the lyrics are pretty cool, just repeated a lot. - 8.75 - <Ray> **MC8**

LIFE OF AGONY - Ugly · Roadrunner
It sounds like LIFE OF AGONY are doing their level best to rip off KYUSS, and to be honest, they're doing a pretty good job of it. For a while. It wears thin quickly, and then what's left? Well, sometimes the singer sings through a megaphone! Oh boy! This is really disappointing, since I liked their River Runs Red album, but that was when they didn't cover stuff like "Don't You (Forget About Me)." What dorks. - 6 - <Ray> **MC9**

LIFE OF AGONY - Soul Searching Sun · Roadrunner
Their debut, River Runs Red, wasn’t too bad. It had maybe 1% heaviness, and was slightly interesting. Well, they "fixed" that on their next LP, Ugly. It was a weak attempt at ripping off KYUSS. Now they’re not even that tolerable. Every song on this piece of shit has "MTV" all over it. I wouldn’t want to know enough about the "Alternative" scene to compare this to anyone, but whatever is really popular with 13 year old girls is probably more listenable than this sugarcoated mess. - 3 - <Ray> **MC11**

LIFELESS - Forward to Suffering · Msound
From what I understand this is a one man project. All guitars, basses, keyboards, drum machine programming & lyrics have been written and performed by Marc Keiffer, except for two songs, the lyrics were by someone else. For a one man work such as this, he should be proud of his accomplishment. The lyrics are simple but dark and the vocals are clearly Death-oriented. The keyboards are awesome along with the unique time changes. The guitar isn’t anything different that I haven’t already heard before, but there are some good bass lines. - 7.25 - <ANG> **MC11**

LIFELESS - The Reconciliation - The Third of a Trilogy · Msound
This is one of the best solo projects I have heard in a long time. Composed by Marc Kieffer the music is Metal but definitely not Death Metal (despite what some may think). Beautiful supporting vocals by Shlomit Butbul grace "My Audience." This was an album that I enjoyed more with every listen. LIFELESS provides the perfect audio atmosphere for solitary late night drinking and self-introspection. As an added bonus, the demo version of the album is included at the end of this disc. - 8.5 - <Quade>

LIFEND - Innerscars · Cruz Del Sur
God damn, LACUNA COIL makes a few dollars and now I've got Debbie Gibson Metal bands coming out of my ass. These guys take an atmospheric Black Metal formula, add hints of Power Metal, and what would any Debbie Gibson Metal band be without pompous female vocals? This actually sounds like the album you would've expected THEATRE OF TRAGEDY to make in their transitory phase from great Doom band to complete sell outs. There are a few well done acoustic interludes a la OPETH, but of course they are desecrated by the vocals of Amy Grant. I just can't feel this type of stuff and I doubt I ever will. For what they're trying to do I guess it's okay. - 6 - <Jack>

LILITU - Servants of Twilight demo - DEMO
Not bad Gothic / Atmospheric stuff with female vocals. - 7.5 - <ANG> **MC11** - "Last Second Additions"

LILITU - The Earth Gods · Emerald Factory
Mournful and dreary Gothic Doom with Death Metal undertones. I generally prefer Doom with a heavier Death Metal presence, but this isn't half bad. I do wish they had concentrated more on the harsh vocals as the cleanly sung passages just don't convey enough emotion to really keep my attention. Also, the keyboards are a little too dominant at times. On the positive side, the production has a somewhat raw feeling which actually gives the music a certain charm. The songs themselves are nicely structured, well-written, and thought-provoking. I think fans of Gothic Doom will find everything they are looking for in LILITU's music. - 8 - <Painkiller>

LILITU - The Delores Lesion · The End
It's always tough to review this band for me, mainly because guitarist/vocalist Derek Bonner is a cool guy. A long time ago he sent me a dubbed copy of KATATONIA's highly sought-after Saw You Drown EP, which to this day is impossible to find. I will never forget his kindness. However, I simply do not feel his musical vision. This is way better than the demo. It's heavier and the Black Metal vocals are sharper and more plentiful, but the Glam vocals just kill it for me. It's sad to hear Metal so dark crippled by cheesy vocal arrangements. As much as I want to lie, I just can't say this is good. - 6.5 - <Jack>

LIMBONIC ART - Epitome of Illusions · Nocturnal Art
Due to fan interest and the poor quality of the original recordings, the band decided to rerecord and update their old demo songs with the production and style that they now utilize. If you recall, the band THY SERPENT also did something similar. I know that most demo represses are stupid, as they, more often than not, have really shitty sound and all the songs have already been heard on the band’s debut album. When a band goes to the trouble of doing something like this, it actually makes me feel better about shelling out the money to purchase it. In the case of Epitome of Illusions, this is really a good job. You can still tell that this is older material, but the reworkings have made the songs themselves much better. For those of you who’ve never heard their stuff before, I would suggest picking up their full-length studio albums (particularly In Abhorrence Dementia) first before buying this one. That way, you’ll better appreciate this piece of work. In a lot of ways, this is better than most full-length albums. - 9.5 - <Ychoril> **MC12**

LINEA 77 - Too Much Happiness Makes Kinda Paranoid · Earache
The bio says this is "DEFTONES, Italian-style..." What in the name of unholy Hell is wrong with Earache? I know it must be tempting to want to cash in on the trend of the day, but Earache couldn't have enough money to buy off MTV and all the necessary radio stations, and without heavy video and radio rotation beating it into their tiny brains, the masses aren't going to seek out new gay bands like this, when they can just get the latest Ozzfest soundtrack CD instead. Stuff like this isn't "music," it's a "product," and a smaller label such as Earache isn't really in a position to market this kind of "product" correctly, and so it won't sell. Maybe their plan is that some bigger label will sign this lame-ass excuse for a band, and then they can license the rights to this album to them. Oh, fuck this, I've wasted entirely too much space on this crap already. - 1 - <Ray>

LIQUIFIED MAGGOTS - Demo 1997 · DEMO
What a super-distorted mess. All Noise, feedback and a drum machine, no songs or anything like them. Is this a joke? - 1.5 - <Ray> **MC11**

LITURGY - Dawn of Ash · Unmatched Brutality
Formerly known as CINERARY, featuring members of DISGORGE and BRODEQUIN, these guys play extremely brutal Death/Grind that also happens to be extremely boring. Painfully boring, in fact. For all their speed, heaviness, and technical skill, absolutely nothing stands out. They have the tools to become something special, but at this point they do little to make a lasting impact. - 5 - <Jack>

LIV KRISTINE - Deus Ex Machina · Swan Lake / Massacre
Considering that Liv Kristine is the female vocalist for THEATER OF TRAGEDY, I was surprised at how "mainstream" this sounded. This stuff just reeks of old 80’s synth-pop (you know, DEPECHE MODE, DURAN DURAN, FLOCK OF SEAGULLS…all the bands you hated as a teenager). Liv has a great voice, but the music has to go. If you hate any of the bands (besides THEATER OF TRAGEDY, of course) that I just mentioned, then Liv’s solo album will disgust you almost as much as a copy of the new SPICE GIRLS CD. This does have some dark and somber moments, but there aren’t enough to save this one from being pure Hell for any real Metalhead. (upped some because Liv can actually sing, but the music is still torture) - 5 - <Ychoril> **MC12**

LIVIDITY - Ritual of Mortal Impalement · DEMO
Brutal and somewhat memorable Death. Very bass-heavy and thick, with no shortness of speed when necessary. But don't think that LIVIDITY rely on speed to make their point, they can be as slow and heavy when they feel like it. A punishing delivery of some fresh meat. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC9**

LIVIDITY - Rejoice in Morbidity EP · Immortal
Do you like your Metal to be brutal? Do you like it to be unrelentingly intense? Do you like vocals so raw that when you hear them, your throat bleeds? Then look no further. LIVIDITY are 100% pure Death. No Doom, no Grind, no Black, no unnecessary extras - only Death remains. And any band who understands the genius of Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lector deserves your support. - 9.75 - <Ray> **MC10**

LIVIDITY - Fetish for the Sick EP · Ablated
Twenty minutes of extreme Death Metal porno sickness. Plus a Cheech sample. It’s well written, well played, fairly memorable and heavy as fuck. What more do you need to know? - 9.25 - <Ray> **MC11**

LIVIDITY - The Age of Clitoral Decay · United Guttural
After an inspired intro by (possibly) Reverend Fishbone, we're treated to the sickest, most perverted Death Metal I've heard in… Well, okay, maybe it's not absolutely the sickest, and I guess there might be a band or two who are more perverted. Maybe. But who's cooler than LIVIDITY? Just to prove it to any residual doubters, they even cover IMPETIGO's "Bloody Pit of Horror." I guess it's not exactly perfect, but despite that (or maybe because of it), The Age of Clitoral Decay is destined for classic status. - 9.75 - <Ray>

LIVING SACRIFICE - Nonexistent · R.E.X.
I understand that their first album was rather SLAYER inspired. This one most assuredly is not. Nonexistent is Death Metal with some occasional Grind beats thrown in for good measure. Musically this is great: very heavy, yet memorable. Vocally, it is a little rough; with the singer trying for a really heavy style and coming up a little short. It's interesting, though. The lyrics are very Christian, but if that's not what you like, keep in mind that it is virtually impossible to understand them without the help of the lyric sheet. - 8.75 - <Ray> **MC8**

LIVING SACRIFICE - Inhabit · R.E.X.
This sounds pretty similar to Nonexistent in that the music is heavy, the production excellent, and unique, and that they certainly aren't afraid to use a Blast beat when necessary. Vocally much improved, it's easier to understand the lyrics, but the vox just sound way better like this, and they are still pretty raw. Of course, as always, the religious message is beaten into the listener. If you don't like that, just don't pay attention to the lyrics, because musically this is undeniably awesome. - 9 - <Ray> **MC8**

LIVING SACRIFICE - Reborn · Tooth & Nail
Now ripping off PANTERA & FEAR FACTORY. And still suckin’. - 1 - <Ray> **MC11** - "Last Second Additions"

LIVING SACRIFICE - The Hammering Process · Solid State
It's not that these guys live the god lie and do their best to shove it down everyone else's throats that makes me hate them. They're brainwashed, weak-willed sheep, and I just feel sorry for them. No, the reason I despise these fucks is because every one of their god damn albums sounds exactly like whatever is popular at the moment. Go back and listen to them if you can stomach it. So, it should come as no surprise that this newest abortion is that gay Industrialized "new" Metal, like SPINESHANK or whatever is hip this week. If these guys stuck with one musical style, I might at least be able to respect their dedication to their musical integrity, and might believe that they practice what they preach [sad though that would be], rather than just using the religious strong-arm tactics of their lyrics as a marketing tool. But they disgustingly flow with the current musical shit-trends, which leads me to think that they must be no more dedicated to their faith than they are to what they call their music. Man, that really leaves these guys totally fucked. - 1 - <Ray>

LIZARD MUSIC - Fashionably Lame · World Domination
I honestly think that they want this to be funny, but it is so torturous that I can find no humor, and their completely pathetic attempts only underscore the fact that if you have to try this hard, you should kill yourself. And I notice that this was recorded by a Mr. Steve Albini, so maybe only the CD format version sucks. - 1 - <Ray> **MC9**

LIZZY BORDEN - Deal With the Devil · Metal Blade
It's been a very long time since LIZZY last accosted my speakers, but if this entire album had been as strong as the Thrashing Power Metal disc-opener, "There Will Be Blood Tonight," I'd be giving it a ten, I guess. Really no longer "shocking," L.B.'s Shock Rock covers the range from the aforementioned to something more like early TWISTED SISTER or even early ALICE COOPER. That's okay with me, 'cause I'm a sick mother fucker who likes early T.S., but I understand that not everyone does. Also there is some multimedia shit on the CD, but it doesn't work. Way to go with the testing, guys. - 7 - <Ray>

LOBOTOMY - Against the Gods / Nailed In Misery · Thrash Corner
The infamous LOBOTOMY were one of the first Swedish Death Metal bands to have balls enough to not record at Sunlight. This disc is a very welcome compilation of their long out of print Against the Gods and Nailed In Misery demos. Although for the most part LOBOTOMY don't stray too far from the traditional Death sound (think of early UNLEASHED), they are masters of the style, and certainly bring their own identity to it. - 9.5 - <Ray> **MC10**

LOBOTOMY - Born in Hell · Metal Blade
This Swedish Death Metal outfit remains true to their homeland roots and the '90s Death Metal style it embodies. Recorded at Sunlight Studios, they obviously have a good sound but one slightly different that the expected. - 8.5 - <Bob>

LOCK-UP - Hate Breeds Suffering · Nuclear Blast
Here we have the COMECON of Grindcore. Gone is Peter Tägtgren, enter Tomas Lindberg. Unfortunately with Lindberg's arrival we have a slight decrease in musical effort. While the former A.T.G. frontman tries to save this LP with his tormented venomous bark, most of this album is just speed, lacking the dynamics and superior production of the first opus. Not to devalue the monumental achievements of the NAPALM DEATH guys, or to say that Nick Barker isn't a percussive bad motherfucker, but this just doesn't do much for me. Other than Lindberg vomiting forth choruses to tracks like "Feeding on the Opiate," "The Jesus Virus," and "High Tide in a Sea of Blood," all you'll remember here is the blinding blur tempo. - 8 - <Jack>

LOGICAL NONSENSE - Expand the Hive · Alternative Tentacles
God damn! You just never know what to expect from an Alternative Tentacles band! LOGICAL NONSNESE start things off with a fairly long sample, then explode into their full Hardcore/Crust intensity. The extremely thick, bass heavy recording adds to the already crushing weight of the riffs, while the vox are screamed in such a way that it’s difficult to tell if the guy is just inhuman or if they’re overdriven a little. Either way, it’s a fucking sick combination of sounds. And just when I’m getting used to this aural attack, they’ll switch to a sludgy crawl for long enough to really confuse me, then back to equally crushing speed. This is the first I’ve heard of the band, but hopefully more is on the way soon! - 9.25 - <Ray> **MC11**

LOGICAL NONSENSE - Soul Pollution · Alternative Tentacles
Maybe not quite as intense as Expand the Hive, but close. - 9 - <Ray> **MC11** - "Last Second Additions"

LONEWOLF - Unholy Paradise · Goi Music
Look, I love JUDAS PRIEST and IRON MAIDEN (the good stuff, that is, not the filler that comprised 60%-80% of their albums), but does that mean I want to hear a half-ass clone band 25 years later? No, sir, I can have no part of this. - 3 - <Jack>

LORD - Funeral Productions · DEMO
First, I must hail Lord Charon for his excellent bass playing throughout this demo, most notably on "Shadows of Massacre." In honesty, it's not just the bass work which is of high quality on these three songs. Everything is very tightly woven together, in an intricate pattern, which relies more on the keyboards of the Countess than I thought it would. This makes for a very interesting and ominous sound, not completely unlike that of NECROMANTIA. Their thick, clear sound solidifies the place of this demo in the vault of eternity. - 9.75 - <Ray> **MC9**

LORD BELIAL - Enter the Moonlight Gate · Death / House of Kicks / No Fashion
More impressive Black Metal licensed by the Metal Blade subsidiary Death records. If only anyone at Death knew what a lyric sheet is... Anyway, the band’s perfect use of keyboards serves to enhance the depressing feeling of the music, but it’s really the sorrowful riffs and haunting solos that crush your soul. Imagine something like early KATATONIA, and you’ll have the right idea. -9.25 - <Ray> **MC11**

LORD GORE - The Autophagous Orgy · Razorback
Well, I don't know if this CD has the coolest cover art I've ever seen, but it's got to be close. And that sick lesbian blood orgy is nothing compared to the monstrous Death Gore musically vomited forth herein. Leave it to Razorback to exhume an undead demon like this. I should probably give this disc a ten, since I can't imagine how anyone could improve upon it (and it's even got their IMPETIGO cover from the Wizards of Gore tribute CD), but I want to leave LORD GORE some place to go with their next monsterpiece. If you like real Metal, you will cum blood when you hear The Autophagous Orgy - I fucking guarantee it. - 9.75 - <Ray>

LORD GORE - Resickened · Razorback
Finally, the highly anticipated new album from the cream of the Razorback crop, the infamous LORD GORE. Gore-drenched, ultra-guttural Death Metal with some of the sickest Death growls known to man. LORD GORE's finest attribute is that they can absolutely crush at any speed. Mostly attacking at a headbanging-friendly mid-pace, but fully capable of going all-out dirge, or at full blast, as this is probably among the fastest material they've ever recorded. In all honesty, this isn't quite as memorable or as rhythmically dynamic as their breakthrough masterpiece, 2002's Autophagous Orgy, but it is LORD GORE and I'll sure as hell take it. Highly recommended for Gore enthusiasts or just plain old Death Metal purists. - 9.5 - <Jack>

LORD GRIMSPEARE - Golgothian Denial: The Reign of Hatred · demo
Cheap Black Metal for beginners. A handful of good ideas destroyed by a lack of budget and/or creativity. That Midwest boredom will drive you fucking nuts. This may be a tenth rate 2-man Black Metal attempt that is ten years behind, but it beats watching the grass grow. - 5.75 - <Jack>
grimspeare@yahoo.com

LORD KAOS - Thorns of Impurity · Warhead
I wonder if these goatfuckers use a drum machine. It doesn’t really sound like one, but I’m not sure a human can play this fast. Not that their super-aggressive Black/War Metal is only speed, but the double bass is sometimes so fast that it nearly sounds like a continuous tone. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC11**

LORD MORTIS - Advanced Tape '92 · DEMO
The singer for this band has one of the top 10 most brutal voices of all time. His brutality is probably helped by the bad production. Other than that noteworthy plus, this demo is pretty average Death, with some Grind parts. A better production would let me know what was intended and what wasn't, so it may or may not be a good idea. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC8**

LORD WIND - Forgotten Songs · Full Moon
Unimpressive Folk / Black Metal combo. - 7.5 - <Ray> **MC11** - "Last Second Additions"

LORDE OF ALL DESIRES - The Scent of Malevolence · Root-o-Evil
Majestic, symphonic Black Metal, with vocals occasionally more in the range of Death Metal growls. The clear sound and excellent playing really add to the blasphemy. - 8.75 - <Ray> **MC12**

LORDS OF MEAT - A Mind a World Away · DEMO
Scott Hoffman surfaces once again. It's okay. This sounds a lot like old SAVATAGE meets DREAM THEATER. The songs are way too long, and the guitars are average at best, but the vocals and production are great. Too bad nothing sticks. There are really no catchy hooks, so the songs go in one ear and out the other. I'm sorry, I wanted to like this demo since Scott is a friend of mine, but it put me to sleep. Better luck next time! - 6.5 - <Darrell> **MC8**

LORDS OF THE STONE - Promo Tape · DEMO
Here we have two songs from their debut album. Anyway, the music is pretty synth / keyboard heavy, with the "Groovy" kind of Doom riffs being dominant. And the (male) singer sounds like the retarded little brother of Tom G. Warrior. There are some female vocals, too, but this isn’t doing much for me. - 7 - <Ray> **MC11**

LOS TERRIBLES - Los Terribles · label unknown
The record label is not known, but I received this disc to review from Napalm Records America, so if you care, contact them. Anyway, I’ve rarely heard a band write songs with 1 riff each, but these guys do it. I now know exactly why no one else does. I can’t stand it. - 5.75 - <Ray> **MC11**

LOSS - Life Without Hope... Death Without Reason · Deathgasm
Funeral Doom is not quite what I've come to expect from Deathgasm, but I see there's a KATATONIA cover, so I'm not complaining. LOSS is in the same vein as bands like SHAPE OF DESPAIR, EVOKEN, and even SKEPTICISM, minus about half the budget and much of the originality, I suppose. Still, you either love Funeral Doom or you don't, and the slow, churning melodic despair of "Cut Up, Depressed and Alone" is probably worth the price by itself. But it turns out the KATATONIA cover of "Brave" is live and features guest vocals by Lord Imperial of the mediocre KRIEG. Major fucking bummer, dude. Oh well, I suppose disappointment is the reason we need bands like LOSS, anyway. - 8.5 - <Jack>

LOST BREED - Save Yourself · Hellhound
A fairly smooth, low-endy production compliments the somewhat raspy vocals. This is a kind of return to adjective-less Metal. Which is what you would expect from Hellhound, of course. LOST BREED do it pretty well, and this is pretty heavy, for what it is. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC9**

LOST GOAT - Golem 7" · Alternative Tentacles
The color sleeve made me think that the sound quality would be supreme (it is), and that they might be Black Metal (they’re not). Actually, L.G. are (not surprisingly, considering their record label) a great Punk band, with some Metal (early BLACK SABBATH maybe) influences that heavy them up sometimes. It’s an interesting combination of styles, & I’ll be looking forward to hearing more. - 9 - **MC11**

LOST GOAT - The Dirty Ones · Tee Pee
I haven't heard anything from LOST GOAT since their Golem 7" from a few years ago, and I really seem to remember this band being better... Not that The Dirty Ones isn't interesting, but this somewhat Punky Hard Rock (in fact, a better description might be Punk Hard Progressive Rock, if that wasn't such a contradiction in terms) just didn't do much for me until about halfway through the album with "The Hanging Tree," and the magic dissipates fast after that inspired track. - 6.5 - <Ray>

LOSTPROPHETS - Start Something · Columbia
Yes, I agree. ‘Start something’ is exactly what I’ll do if I ever meet one of these Limey fags. You see, long before Ray asked me to review this piece of shit, I was actually (and quite embarrassingly) duped into paying hard-earned money for this generic trash. I was falsely lured in and brainwashed by the deceptively catchy single "Last Train Home." Maybe it was just the shock of actually seeing Caucasians playing music on MTV for the first time in 12 years. So I bought it, got it home, and I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that the rest of the album consisted of nothing but nauseatingly cliche‚ Pop filler. The only two goals this band must have set for this album were to make sure it had a big, slick production, and to make sure all of the words rhymed. This "promising young band" is about as talented as William Hung, and their so-called "bludgeoning Metal/Pop madness" is about as heavy as a handful of cut hair. In summary, these guys are gayer than Graham Norton’s g-string. - 2 - <Jack>

LOSTSOULS - Fracture · Nuclear Blast
Very "modern" sounding "new Thrash" with all kinds of repetitive little riffs, mildly overdriven screamed vocals, and that crisp production all these bands have. Sometimes they sound like maybe they listened to a little of the last couple NAPALM DEATH albums, and grabbed some of those type of "grooves." It’s really not horrible, probably good for what it is, in fact. But, having said that, I doubt I’ll ever listen to this disc again. - 7 - <Ray> **MC12**

LOUDBLAST - Sublime Dementia · Futurist / Noise
I have waited a long time to hear more from this band than what I heard on the In the Eyes of Death compilation, and my wait was not in vain. This kills. I wish I could find a copy of their first CD. Anyway, you do like Death Metal, right? Then give this a listen. - 9 - <Ray> **MC8**

LOVE FORSAKEN - Sex, War & Prayers · demo
At least this band lets you know right off the bat that they suck at naming things. Musically this is unique in an odd way. Off time, synth-obsessed Thrash that goes against the grain. This might be something more mellow that the Tech Metal dorks could get into. It certainly has enough disdain for conventional patterns, and you can’t say it isn’t creative. - 7.5 - <Jack>
loveforsaken05@yahoo.it

LOVE LIES BLEEDING - S.I.N. · CCP
This is fairly standard "symphonic" Goth Black Metal (from France, this time). It's certainly well done, but seconds after the disc has stopped spinning, I can only remember the most basic things about it: fast, keyboards, some female vocals... - 7.5 - <Ray>

LOVE LIKE BLOOD - An Irony of Fate · Relapse / Release / Rebel
This is what I traditionally think of when I hear the word "Alternative." There is a definite CURE influence, but L.L.B. wisely leave behind most of THE CURE's pop aspirations, so their depression and sickness can take control. Give something different a try. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC8**

LOVE SPIRALS DOWNWARDS - Sideways Forest EP · Projekt
The first of these three tracks has a beautiful female vocal over an acoustic guitar, minimal keyboards and drums. I'm somewhat reminded of JULEE CRUISE. The next song is a remix of the first, with the same vocals, but no guitar, and new, electronic drums, and an annoying flatulent noise. The final song, "Amarillo," is back to delicate the style of the first, title, track, but with no vocals. While I didn't much like the remix, the remaining pair of cuts are very moving and skillfully executed. Hopefully I'll be hearing more from this band soon. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC10**

LOW - Age of Panic · DEMO
Although LOW is a Death Metal band, these songs really remind me of RIGOR MORTIS. Well, with Death-style growled vocals. That’s a combination I like a lot. Don’t miss out on this kick ass demo. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC11**

LUCIFER'S HAMMER - The Burning Church · DEMO
Umm, I think that these goat worshippers may have taken the whole "bad production = more evil" idea a bit too far, as the production (if it could be called that) is so bad as to really make a review nearly impossible. Perhaps had they recorded live, using a single microphone across the room, I could have told you about the songs or riffs or anything else. All I can really detect are the screechy vocals, and a distant snare drum. Wait, perhaps that's rain, or part of a riff. Maybe when they record again, I'll be able to better hear, and thus describe, their music. - 3.25 - <Ray> **MC9**

LUCIFER´S HAMMER - The Mists of Time · DEMO (CD)
An American band that covers "Enter the Eternal Fire" and doesn’t mutilate this utter classic? Yes, I know, I would’ve put that in the field of myth as well, but I’m listening to the CD right now, so unless they wear a fake identity, it is possible. Well, seriously, after having it traded almost by accident, LUCIFER´S HAMMER’s CD took me quite by surprise. But a pleasant one for sure! Already recorded in 1997, they somehow managed to blend elements of BATHORY, CANDLEMASS and early American Death Metal into a really great mixture. I know it sounds impossible but (almost) ignoring a natural law they went ahead and did it anyway. Sometimes the mood reminds a tiny little bit of the first recordings of SIGH (a band I just cannot praise enough!), maybe due to the eerie keyboard parts that are thrown in here and there. Anyway, this is really great and everyone with just a bit of intelligence left should run right now to get a copy of this masterpiece! - 9.5 - <Opyros> **MC12**

LUDICRA - Hollow Psalms · Life is Abuse
Black Metal
1981-2002
ENGLAND - Black Metal, 21, a once cherished and great genre, was brutally murdered over the course of the last five years by at least 250-300 suspects including California's LUDICRA who were marketed as Black Metal yet sounded more like what DEATH would, had they not known how to play their instruments. Like many of their accomplices, LUDICRA tried to sound weird for the sake of sounding weird and were as uninteresting as humanly possible. Survivors include parents, VENOM and early BATHORY, and three sons, DARKTHRONE, IMMORTAL, and CRADLE OF FILTH. Black Metal will be sorely missed as it was too young to die. R.I.P. - 1.5 - <Jack>

LULLABY - My Master Lucifer · Wild Rags
Slow, eerie and sometimes pretty odd sounding Black Metal. The vocals are sort of whispered, but a lot louder than the music, which is mostly cool. Every now and then you really notice the drum machine in a bad way, but with a little more drum programming, and a slightly different mix, this might be great. As is, it's not bad. - 8 - <Ray> **MC9**

LUNACY - Killing Giants · DEMO
Mixing Bay-area with European Thrash, LUNACY cut loose with five tunes. It's a good offering, and includes some diversity ("The Biscuitman" has some Funk/ Hardcore influences). The guitar work is excellent and the vocals have a raw edge to them. Definitely worth checking out. - 8.25 - <Gerry> **MC7**

LUNACY - Believe? · Suffering / Witchhunt
Extremely well written and played Thrash, with sort of aggressively sung vocals, but occasionally goofy lyrics, which detract a bit. But just ignore the lyrics when necessary, and concentrate on the music, which is out of this world. - 9 - <Ray> **MC9**

LUNACY - Grey Silence EP · Witchhunt / Suffering
Just as musically awesome as Believe?, but the lyrics still bring this down a little bit. One of the songs is about finding a place to take a crap. I guess it's supposed to be funny. The music is flawless, and the vocals are fine, so I just wish the lyrics were of the same quality. - 9 - <Ray> **MC9**

LUNAR AURORA - Of Stargates and Bloodstained... · Kettenhund
This is similar to the above-reviewed album but perhaps a bit more straightforward as far as the songwriting is concerned. - 9 - <Ray> **MC12**

LUNAR AURORA - Seelenfeuer · Napalm
LUNAR AURORA is Germany’s answer, apparently, to EMPEROR. This CD, their second, is still heavily influenced by the Norsemen, but they have branched off to incorporate other elements to their sounds so that they are not merely a clone band anymore. While they still have a strong leaning towards the EMPEROR sound (around the era of their split CD with ENSLAVED), the keyboards are more prominent and there is a strong "folkish" leaning in some of their song structures. This folkish element is most apparent when they use acoustic guitar and in their keyboard parts. This is a definite improvement over their first album, but is still in the same vein. These guys usually play in the same speedier range that EMPEROR usually plays in, but LUNAR AURORA aren’t afraid to slow it down in places nor are they afraid to throw in some really creative keyboard work as well. - 9.5 - <Ychoril> **MC12**

LUNATIC - Empty Promises · DEMO
Very intense and fairly technical Death Thrash, which, believe me, is a nice change once in a while. All drummers, bassists and guitarists should appreciate the level of musicianship displayed here, and while the vocals take a little time to get used to, it will most likely occur. These guys have some good ideas and hopefully they will make a name for themselves in the future. - 8 - <Jack> **MC9**

LUNATIC - Uncontrollable Hatred · DEMO
I think that putting a "Parental Advisory - Explicit Lyrics" warning on a demo is utterly stupid, so when I saw one on LUNATIC's J-Card, I drastically lowered my expectations. Good thing, too, for while the recording and packaging are superb, the music seems to be an insane combination of Death Metal and "Slammy" start-stop PANTERA riffs. The vox are even more in the hated "tough-guy" vein. I truly loathe giving this band such a negative review, since they are personally cool guys, but this is what I honestly hear, and I just don't like it. - 6 - <Ray> **MC10**

LUNATIC - Uncontrollable Hatred · DEMO (CD)
A very cool sample from Pulp Fiction starts off this full-length disc with a bang. Immediately the Deathrash kicks in. There are a few little musical snags here and there - just bugs to be ironed out. But for the most part, this is great. Extremely energetic, and often imaginative. The yelled vocals and catchy riffs have almost a kind of DEMOLITION HAMMER feeling to them sometimes, and that kicks ass. I’ll be keeping an ear open to hear how these guys develop. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC11**

LUNATIC GODS - Sitting by the Fire · Metal Age
As if the "original" parts of the music (weird keyboards, or whatever those are) weren’t bad enough, I have to put up with these terrible sissified vocals and generally happy little songs. No thanks. - 4 - <Ray> **MC12**

LUNATIC PARADISE - Piktojo Amziaus Rauda EP · Dangus
While the skillfully played Doomy Death of this band offers little innovation, it's still worth a listen. - 7.75 - <Ray> **MC10**

LUNGBRUSH - Old School New School · Pavement
This was a hard review to write. Do to what I’d heard about them, I didn’t think that I’d much like this Hardcore / Metal crossover. Well, allow me to admit that I underestimated Roach, and really should have known better. LUNGBRUSH really aren’t a Metal / Hardcore crossover. More like newer, more intense, Hardcore and old school Punk, with some Metal influences in there, too. Thankfully, they wisely stay away from the trendy kinds of riffs and structures - although the songs certainly do have a groove. And Roach’s vocals are clearly another plus, as he can go seamlessly from a Deathlike rasp to a Hardcore yell, to a clean deep tone, to something like early SUICIDAL TENDENCIES. Other singers could take a range like that, and have it all be shit, forcing me to advise them to stick to the growly stuff, but Roach almost never sounds "wrong," and always seems to do exactly what is best for the song at any given moment. And you’ll want to read along with these lyrics. While not flawless, this is an impressive debut. - 9 - <Ray> **MC12**

LUST - Lust · DEMO
Very primitive, raw Black Metal, that’s mostly all drums and screams. There might be riffs buried in here somewhere, but the anti-production has killed them, if they exist. Which, of course, they might not, since I’d believe that these guys just don’t like riffs, and use guitars primarily to generate noise. - 5 - <Ray> **MC12**

LUX OCCULTA - Forever Alone, Immortal · Pagan
Nearly flawless atmospheric Black/Doom Metal. - 9.75 - <Ray> **MC10**

LUX OCCULTA - Dionysos · Pagan
Self-described as "Occult Metal," this is an extremely close to perfect combination of majesty and brutality. ‘Nuff said. - 9.75 - <Ray> **MC11**

LYCANTHROPY - ...As the Mourners Arise · PtE
Majestic Black Metal with keyboards. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC11** - "Last Second Additions"

LYNCH MOB - Smoke This · Koch
George Lynch is back and this time he has short hair (a trend that has befallen many of the former Glam bands). This is unbearable and I chose not to finish listening to this piece of radio friendly shit. Being relatively new at writing reviews I can't help but wonder why their promoters thought this magazine would even review this disc. I guess bad publicity is better than no publicity! [Exactly their thought. -Ed.] Still it is inexcusable, and this fucking disc along with the glossy promo photo is going to be destroyed. I won't even consider trading this in for something else because it doesn't deserve to be in circulation. Lighter fluid, matches, and a coffee can; smoke this. - 1 - <Quade>
