C.I.A. - Attitude · Progressive
For some reason, I was expecting this to be pretty bad. Sometimes I'm really
wrong. In reality, this is an excellent Thrash album. There is an unbelievable
amount of energy in this record. Evans obviously gave everything he had to give
and the result is awesome. - 9.25- <Ray> **MC8**
C.J.S.S. - Kings of the World · Pavement
I'd really hoped that I could simply type "Queens of the world" and
be done with it, but this really isn't that bad. Featuring David Chastian and...
Wait a minute! Did this guy really just sing "We're the kings of the world
and we're gonna get ya!" like four times in a row? And looking over the
rest of the lyrics, I see that this is hardly the worst offender. Oh man, how
do people feel good about themselves while singing that kind of pap? I'd be
too embarrassed to stand in front of a group of people and say shit like "Have
no fear, their end is near / They're Wild / Wild in the streets." I was
considering saying that this proto-Thrash wasn't so bad, but the dorky and all-to-understandable
lyrics have completely fucked it for me. I know they'd never do it, because
they clearly think that their shit is gold, but going all instrumental next
time would be a great idea. - 7.75 - <Ray>
C.O.R.N. CORN - Corn Again · Agydol
This 17 track compilation/ hits tape examines the history of C.O.R.N. CORN,
and for the most part is at least interesting. However, the lead track, "Fuck
You," grows old after about 15 seconds. The extremely poor recording quality
adds to the overall feeling. I would recommend listening to this in much the
same way as you would listen to "Earache My Eye." I'm sure this is
meant to be funny, and it is. They manage to make fun of just about everyone
and several different styles of music too. The songs range from acoustic guitar
to drum machine induced Noise. The lyrics are sexist, homophobic and sexist.
Taken as the joke it is, this is funny, but still a bit to long. Favorite track:
"My Girlfriend is a Lesbian." - 7.25 - <Ray> **MC7**
C.S.S.O. / MASTIC SCUM - Clitto's Special Hits / Rape split 7"
· Ohne Maulkorb
Each of these two Grind masters deliver four cover songs with C.S.S.O. starting
things off with an insane acoustic version of CARCASS' "Genital Grinder,"
followed up with just as warped versions of GENERAL SURGERY, REGURGITATE, and
NAPALM DEATH songs. MASTIC SCUM start off their somewhat more obscure selections
with a DOCTOR AND THE CRIPPENS cover, and blast right through their renditions
of ELECTRO HIPPIES, UNSEEN TERROR, and RIGHTEOUS PIGS songs. I like the bands
and I like the all-covers concept of the EP, so needless to say, this is essential.

CABAL - Midian · Red Stream
Recorded way back in 1990, this Thrash onslaught, featuring Killjoy on vocals,
has held up pretty well. In fact, very well. - 8 - <Ray>
CADAVER - ...In Pains · Relativity / Earache
A little more on the experimental side of Death Metal, not totally unlike DISHARMONIC
ORCHESTRA. The vocals are a bit screechy and if they were a little different,
it might help. But they are easily distinguished from other bands, so that is
obviously in their favor. Musically they are untouchable and this is, all things
considered, an excellent release. - 9.25- <Ray> **MC8**
CADAVER INC - Discipline · Earache
Remember the old Death band CADAVER? This is the reincarnation of that outfit
for the new millennium. What are they like? High-speed Death / Thrash in the
vein of ANGELCORPSE, but not quite as earth-shattering. Maybe it's overexposure,
but a snare drum being rapped 200 MPH no longer is enough to sustain my interest.
Not that I don't appreciate their extremity - I certainly do - but the faster
tunes on this LP are easily forgettable. Some songs like "Kill Tech,"
"Rupture," and "Point Zero" are a little easier to get into
with their sinister mid-paced riffing, and the vocalist has a decent snarl,
but most of this album is a blur. Most definitely par listening for any speed
freak, but it needs to be more memorable, more dynamic. Nonetheless, good to
see more veterans back in action. - 6.5 - <Jack>
CADAVER - Necrosis · Candlelight
Regaining their senses (to some degree, at least), and once again simply going
by "CADAVER," this band has also turned the clock back on their sound
in some ways. And I mean that in the best possible way. Some songs here are
fairly modern sounding Black/Death Metal, while others have more of an old-school
style/feeling, but all slightly suffer from a production that at times seems
somewhat too polished. This is certainly not a flawless album, but it’s good
enough to make me think that these blasphemous bastards have that in them. -
8.75 - <Ray>
CADAVERIA - Far Away from Conformity · Scarlet
Man, has this bitch gone downhill. I remember her vocals for OPERA IX being
at least tolerable. Her abrasive vocals here are downright weak, and her clean
singing sounds like fucking Lita Ford for christ's sake (which coincidentally
is very close to conformity). I'll still masturbate to the poster I have of
her by my bed, but it won't mean as much. - 5.5 - <Jack>
CADAVEROUS QUARTET - Know Your Coroner · DEMO
Ten extreme Death tracks. Interesting variations are approached on the vocals:
Ultra-raw vomits, yells, and multi -tracked phrases. Very interesting. And the
songs are even sorta memorable, which is very difficult to achieve with this
brutality level. - 8.75- <Ray> **MC8**
CADAVEROUS QUARTET - The Extinction Agenda · DEMO
For only $10, this is a deal. C.Q. have a style similar to that of DEATH's Leprosy
album, but a bit more experimental. Very clear sound, and well thought out
songs, are the least of this band's assets. Excellent vocals, and even lyrics.
I also like the solos. C.Q. are at the point where all they need is a little
fine tuning of their drum sound and a label with a distribution deal to pick
them up. And to get rid of the dopey Hendrix cover. - 9.25- <Ray> **MC9**
CADUCITY - Whirler of Fate · Shiver
Very impressive, alternatively Doomy & upbeat Death Metal. This is apparently
a concept album, which I guess is kinda cool. And one of the guys has a MOTÖRHEAD
shirt on for his band photo. That's all I need to know. - 8.5 - <Ray>

CAGE - Astrology · World War III
CAGE crank out sharp '80s-style Heavy Metal on their latest effort - Astrology.
This release contains some seriously energized tunes delivered by a highly talented
group of guys who obviously love to play. Sean Peck's vocal-performance is powerful-as-hell.
He pours strength and emotion into every note he hits. What really stands out
is the playing-ability of guitarists Eric Horton and Dave Garcia. These guys
have a solid chemistry and tear it up with some wicked riffs and intense solos.
I'm slightly disappointed with the bass-sound, though. It is almost buried in
the mix. I'm sure they'll iron this out the next time around. Minor complaints
aside, this is great album. CAGE is carrying the banner of Heavy Metal with
well-deserved pride. - 8.25 - <Painkiller>
CALAMUS - The Road Trax · DEMO (CD)
Horrible, distorted vocal crap that is somehow also very mellow. Great combination
of styles that is. Thankfully there are only two songs here, one of which is
accurately called "Piece of Shit." At least they believe in truth
in advertising. - 3 - <Ray> **MC12**
CALLENISH CIRCLE - Escape EP · Polar Bear
This first release from Holland's Polar Bear Records is impressive Death / Black
Metal in the tradition of IN FLAMES, but somewhat more aggressive. - 9.5 - <Ray>
**MC12**
CALLENISH CIRCLE - My Passion // Your Pain · Metal Blade
Okay, what once was an awesome, innovative Death/Doom band, is now reduced to
IN FLAMES clone #198,767,496. So, did Metal Blade simply demand these guys change
to fit what's hot right now, or were they just hungry? The world may never know.

CALM SITE - Steelpit · demo
Three-song CD/demo of Finnish Death/Rock. Some riffs remind me of CREMATORY
or mid-era PARADISE LOST, while much of the material has a Godless Beauty-era
CEMETARY vibe. One might not think the mixing of Death/Doom music with traditional
Rock drumming would work, but with Death grunts intact, it actually does. The
distorted hillbilly vocals on "Asskin" have got to go, though. - 8.75

CALVARY - Across the River of Life EP · Lollypop/Polyphemus
This is a tough band to describe. They range from very atmospheric Doom, to
a sort of creepy Black Metal, to more standard Death. The transition from one
style to the next is seamless, and would almost be enough by itself, but they
don't stop there. Every song is amazingly well written and executed; complex
and heavy, yet instantly memorable. I'm very anxious to hear more from this
great band. - 9.5 - <Ray> **MC10**
CAMAROSMITH - Camarosmith · Dead Teenager
At its best, this band sounds like a half-assed composite of SOUNDGARDEN and
BLACK SABBATH cover bands, which I can at least slightly tolerate. At its worst,
I think that it likely causes brain damage in most mammals. - 3 - <Ray>
CANCER - To The Gory End · Silent Scream
CANCER is a reasonably impressive Death band. The vocals are on par with the
Death Standard and are occasionally excellent. Musically, CANCER is much like
countless other Death bands: brutal, crunchy, powerful, raw... You name it.
They have some backing vocal help from John (OBITUARY) Tardy on the track "Die
Die," which was not among the best tracks, even with the help. My top four
picks are (in ascending order): "C.F.C" (Which apparently stands for
"Cancer Fucking Cancer"), "Body Count," "Imminant Catastrophy
[sic]" and the awesome title track. Most of the other songs (nine in all)
are good, just not quite as good as those I mentioned. The lyrics are what killed
some songs, like in "Die Die," the title is repeated far too often,
and the rest of the lyrics are somewhat poor. With a bit of refinement, CANCER
could well be the Death band. I have high hopes for their next effort.
- 8.5- <Ray>
{CANCER continued on with two more albums that I know of, and I have heard that
they altered their sound a bit and released a fourth album, but I've never even
seen an ad for that...} **MC4**
CANCER - Death Shall Rise · Restless
After their first awesome release, I had no doubt this one would be even greater
with James Murphy on guitar, but I was wrong. This album is a great disappointment
to me. It is basic Death Metal, not worthy of James' talents. But I'll give
it one thing: the tunes are catchy. John Walker still has a great voice, but
not great enough to save this album. Favorite song: "Hung, Drawn and Quartered."
- 7.5 - <Tom> **MC7**
CANCER - The Sins of Mankind · Restless
Much improved from their disappointing Death Shall Rise, the CANCER lads
prove that not only is there life after Murphy [their old guitarist], but that
life is better without him. This shows a more confident, and accomplished band
that is on the edge of becoming a major name in the world of Death. - 8.5 -
<Ray> **MC8**
CANCEROUS FACTOR - Malignant · DEMO
Excellent production, and heavy, memorable music. Just about the sickest vocals.
From the first second, I knew this was going to kill, and it does: The devastation
caused by this Death band is total and complete. C. FACTOR do not fuck around.
- 8.75- <Ray> **MC8**
CANDIRIA - Process of Self Development · MIA
This is the first time I've heard this band and I'm disappointed. CANDIRIA is
too eclectic for their own good. An album like this makes me appreciate the
individual elements in straight form that put together here like a crooked house.
I'd rather listen to THELONIUS MONK if I want to hear jazz; ALL OUT WAR for
Hardcore / Metal; and CYPRESS HILL for Rap. All these elements are raised together
to build an album of pure excrement. My advice to the band: "Quit drinking
your bong water." - 2 - <Quade>
CANDIRU - Disadvantage of Surprise 7" · Relapse
As with all Relapse 7"s, this has excellent sound quality. CANDIRU crush
their way through one track on each side. Their style of Industrial is fairly
Death influenced, but retains a clear identity. Harsh, raw, and very heavy,
this shows much promise. - 8.5- <Ray> **MC8**
CANDIRU - Unloved and Weeded Out · Release / Relapse
Experimental. Electronic. Weird as fucking hell. Heavy, too, most of the time.
And, somehow, all this stuff combines into what is mostly very listenable Industrial.
Some Death elements are in there, but not a whole bunch, and I'm sure that's
the idea. This is so layered, that with each listen you gain something else
from it, and that's a really strong point for me. Open your mind, and give this
a shot. The CD has 5 bonus tracks, so if you have a player, get that format.
- 9 - <Ray> **MC8**
CANDIRU / FAT HACKER - Propulsion / Fat Hacker 7" ·
Red Stream
CANDIRU sounds way more experimental with this release and I must say, it fits
them better. The more Death style seemed a bit off. Perhaps a little forced.
This is still heavy, but in a different way. I like this better.
FAT HACKER are weird. In the good way. I'm reminded a little of John Zorn. That
should, hopefully, give you an idea of the awesome range of styles this band
can achieve. It takes a couple listens, but this is incredible.
An excellent split EP, available on black or swirl vinyl. - 9 - <Ray>

CANDLEMASS - Candlemass · Nuclear Blast
This being the first new album with Messiah back in the band in over 15 years (as crazy as it seems, Messiah’s last time in the studio with CANDLEMASS was 1989’s Tales of Creation, obviously I’m not including the ’91 and ’03 live albums), I was more than a little concerned. Reunion albums always make me nervous. Okay, Halford rejoining JUDAS PRIEST was a good move for all, and I was happy to see Bruce and Adrian back with IRON MAIDEN (although the reformed IM has yet to top the work of Bruce’s "solo" band’s last two or three albums). And no one was happier than I was to see Schmier rejoin DESTRUCTION a few years ago. But despite successful reunions like those, just one bad one can sour a person on the very concept. Take EXODUS for example. Tempo of the Damned had one good track on it, "Was Is My Shepherd," and the rest were just varying levels of embarrassment. I won’t even mention their new plastic abortion. Now that I think about it, maybe these reunions are more often that not okay. I even sort of like that new OBITUARY album. In any case, I should have never worried about CANDLEMASS. With Messiah back on vocals, all is right with the world (of this band) again. I was just annihilated from the first seconds of the disc-opener, the Thrashy "Black Dwarf." The Doomier "Seven Silver Keys" followed, leaving me stunned in its wake, and even on my first spin, before I listened to the rest of the album, I knew that this would be an all-time classic. The band’s traditional blending of Doom with Thrashier parts is as perfect here as it has ever been. Occasionally in reviews I mention a couple stand-out songs from the album in question, and I was all set to do that here. But as I thought about it, I found it nearly impossible to narrow down the list. Maybe the haunting "Seven Silver Keys" would be my pick, but all the songs are just as amnazing in different ways. It is my understanding that some pressings (perhaps the digipak? Maybe only in some countries) have a bonus track called "Mars and Volcanos." You’ll want to be certain to get that version. - 9.75 - <Ray>
CANNIBAL CORPSE - Eaten Back to Life · Death/Caroline
This album is, in a word, constant. Not terribly original, or especially creative.
But all the songs are crunchy, brutal, and occasionally speedy, Death Metal.
It seems obvious to me that the CORPSE-men put a lot of themselves into Eaten
Back to Life. Everything sounds like they are giving all they can and then
a little more. Unfortunately, the songs fall somewhat short of being distinguishable
from one another. All the lyrics remind me of slasher films, lots of blood and
gore. The vocals are very raw and require a lyric sheet or an incredible tolerance
(the lyrics are provided). They do, however, fit perfectly with the music. Several
of the songs are extremely good and this shows me that CANNIBAL CORPSE has what
it takes. Eaten Back to Life is a good first effort and I think that
this band will just need some time to develop a more individual style. I'm glad
to see that not all Death Metal comes from Florida (CANNIBAL CORPSE is from
New York), and I'm looking forward to hearing more from this band. - 8.25- <Ray>
{It wouldn't be too much longer before these sick bastards figured out how to
write perfect Death Metal, and released The Bleeding. Then after what
looked to be a major obstacle (the loss of frontman Chris Barnes to the band
SIX FEET UNDER), they returned with a new growler (George "Corpsegrinder"
Fisher), and the only slightly less than perfect Vile, and followed that
up with one of the best Death Metal albums of all time, Gallery of Suicide.
And somewhere along the way, they gave in to temptation and moved to Florida...}

CANNIBAL CORPSE - Butchered at Birth · Death/ Metal Blade
This is the second release from this New York Death band. If you thought Eaten
Back to Life was psychotic, then get this: The band has matured nicely,
finally finding its niche. This band is one of the sickest you will find. Weaving
vocals of sheer gore, with music of a brutal intensity, and Chris Barnes' vocals
and lyric writing; they have become a well oiled killing machine. Vocals range
from bestial to demonic. With backing vocals from Glen Benton, "Vomit the
Soul" is one of the better tracks, along with "Covered with Sores,"
"Gutted" & the title track. Try reading the lyrics when you listen
to the tape. The vocals are too fast too keep up with. Overall, I think Butchered
at Birth is a vast improvement from their last effort. --News flash. The
original artwork for this LP has been banned! The new cover is all white, with
no artwork at all! A coupon is enclosed so you can order the real art, but this
is total bullshit! What ever happened to the "Land of the free?" Tipper
Gore must die!-- - 8.5 - <Paul R> **MC6**
CANNIBAL CORPSE - Tomb of the Mutilated · Metal Blade
Great cover art. Banned again. Even the "censored" art has been banned
in some places! And they have the goriest lyrics this side of AUTOPSY. Heavy?
Fuck yeah! Brutal? Holy shit is it ever! Even remotely memorable? Nope. Boring?
Sadly, yes. This album is so brutal that it could kill everything on earth.
These freaks know brutal. And they know how to get a great sounding recording.
But what they don't know is how to make me remember any of their songs. Lyrics
- sure. I love 'em. And what cool song titles! And the cover - stunning! But
can I remember a single riff or anything like that? Nope, I fell asleep. Upped
some for sheer brutality. - 7.5 - <Ray> **MC7**
CANNIBAL CORPSE - Hammer Smashed Face EP · Metal Blade
Three very brutal songs on this: "Hammer Smashed Face" (which is also
on their Tomb... album), "The Exorcist" (A POSSESSED cover),
and "Zero the Hero" (a BLACK SABBATH cover). This is a definite must
buy. The covers are soooooo fucking brutal! - 9.5- <Pete> **MC8**
CANNIBAL CORPSE - The Bleeding · Metal Blade
I was very surprised, to say the least, when I first listened to this album.
The CORPSE have traded a little of their brutality for about a thousand times
as much memorability. This allows them to show what talented musicians they
have become. Chris has also altered his vocal style so that you can sorta understand
what he's saying. But fear not, this is still as brutal as a nuclear war, and
twice as sick. Notice my favorite songs: "Fucked With a Knife" and
"Stripped Raped and Strangled." Really all the rest are excellent,
too. This is their best album, and has totally changed my mind about this band.
- 9.75- <Ray> **MC8**
CANNIBAL CORPSE - Vile · Metal Blade
New vocalist George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher has done almost nothing
to change this band's sound. As always, the CORPSE-men deliver on their promise
of brutal Death Metal. I don't really think that this will win them any new
fans, but anyone who was worried that Vile might see this band heading
in a more commercial direction will be delighted to find out that this is more
intense than The Bleeding, although less memorable (which is mostly due
to it being mixed with the bass lower, and the vocals louder). I know that this
band is popular with a lot of dorks who also like PANTY-TERA and WHITE ZOMBIE,
(and thus it is trendy for those into more Underground bands to not like them)
but that's not CANNIBAL's fault. They have never moved from their commitment
to provide gory Death, and I respect that. While I would like to torture quite
a few of their idiot fans, I stand behind this band, and this release. - 9.25
- <Ray> **MC10**
CANNIBAL CORPSE - Gallery of Suicide · Metal Blade
My major complaint with their last slab of Death, Vile, was that it traded
in some of the sheer catchiness of The Bleeding for a bit more brutality.
It was a good idea at the time, since they likely wanted to prove that losing
Chris Barnes wouldn't water them down. It has only made the band better to be
rid of the dead weight. Corpsegrinder is currently by far the better growler.
Back to this masterpiece: The CANNIBALs have wisely rediscovered the perfect
song-writing and production of the aforementioned The Bleeding and only
lost a touch of the brutality of Vile to do it. That's a trade I'd be
glad to make, too. Plus, the musicianship is just amazing. - 9.75 - <Ray>
**MC11**
CANNIBAL CORPSE - Bloodthrist · Metal Blade
I'm not sure what to say about this album. I like it, but sometimes it sounds
like the vocals were recorded while listening to just the click track - they're
not wildly out of time, but also don't seem to have anything to do with what's
going on musically. That's not necessarily bad, but considering their last few
albums, it is a little weird. And that's not all that's strange. Sometimes the
music gets (dare I say it?) a little too simple and repetitive. Sure, it's awesome
most of the time, but just not always. If I had to guess, I'd think that maybe
the band was rushed to get this disc out. Or perhaps they just wanted to try
some new ideas with the music and vocals patterns. We should all remember that
not all experiments are successes, and that you can't rush perfection. But still,
Bloodthrist is no where close to being a bad album. I guess I just expect flawlessness
from these sick bastards. - 8.75 - <Ray>
CANNIBAL CORPSE - Live Cannibalism · Metal Blade
I don't know if I've ever heard of an album being recorded live in Indiana (okay,
only 5 out of 18 tracks were recorded here, in my home state, but that's plenty
for me to mention it), but leave it to these sickos to make that happen. Obviously,
this is pretty much for fans only, but the sonic quality of the recording (the
majority of which is from Milwaukee, at the Rave) is excellent, and they do
most of the songs I'd have been yelling at them to do, had I the foresight to
have attended. For example, they start with "Staring Through the Eyes of
the Dead," and end with the monstrous "Hammer Smashed Face,"
hitting classics along the way, like "Stripped, Raped and Strangled,"
"Fucked With a Knife" (introduced with "This next song goes out
to all the fucking women out there"), "Devoured by Vermin," and
"Skull Full of Maggots." As I mentioned, 18 songs in all, for well
over an hour of sheer brutality. It's of course also pretty cool to hear Corpsegrinder
singing the older stuff, and generally he does a commendable job, but not surprisingly
is the best on the songs on which he initially sang. In fact, the only complaint
I can manage is about the packaging. It's almost nonexistent. I mean, the usual
Vincent Locke cover art is excellent, but that's all you get. There is no booklet
to speak of, with the cover consisting of one double-sided sheet of paper. I'm
not really sure what to make of that, but it seems like a really cheap-assed
way to go to me. And that's enough to keep this from perfection. But make no
mistake, as far as live albums go (especially for Death Metal), this is a classic.
- 9.5 - <Ray>
CANNIBAL CORPSE - Gore Obsessed · Metal Blade
Huh... Is that "No Remorse"? It is! Weird! But not very good at all.
Wait, is the CD already over? I must have drifted off to sleep. For all it's
speed and want of aggression, this album really falls flat. Maybe it's that
the vocals and music seem to be in different universes, with little relation
to one anther. Or maybe it's that they just didn't have time to really perfect
things, for some reason. Or perhaps the CANNIBALs are running out of ideas.
But that doesn't seem to be the case. There are plenty of ideas here, they're
just not... right. That makes Gore Obsessed the band's most boring album since
Tomb of the Mutilated, but not half as heavy or brutal. I'm probably
too generous with my rating. - 7.5 - <Ray>
CANTAR - Promo Tape '93 · DEMO
Technical and sorta progressive Death, with certain Doom elements. Very interesting
to hear, and very easy to remember. The vocals are likewise interesting: Sometimes
multi-tracked, but always raw. This may be a bit too experimental for some,
and a clearer production would help, but this is really amazing. - 9.25- <Ray>
**MC8**
CANVAS - Lost in Rock · Prosthetic / Metal Blade
Good grief. Imagine John Zorn's schizophrenic musical juxtapositions, but without
his vision (or should I say "genius") or real extremity. As you might
guess, this tries really hard to be avant-garde, or at least interesting, but
in reality, it's just horrible and unlistenable. - 1 - <Ray>
CAPITOL EYE - Mood Swingz · Doctor Kavorkian Productions
Rap-Core from the LIMP BIZKIT school of cock-sucking. This is a pathetic excuse
for music, and I shit on any band that plays this garbage! - 1 - <Painkiller>
CAPTAIN SMOOTHIE - Captain Smoothie · DEMO
I don't often get to review a Rock band, but I'll give it shot. This 8 song
demo was recorded live to four-track, but in spite of that, the sound is very
clear. Okay, the vocals are sometimes a little too loud, and that makes them
sound weird, but all things considered, that's not really a big deal. I'm not
sure to whom I can compare CAPT. S., since my Rock vocabulary is rather limited,
but they seem to cover a range from almost Folk to a fairly hard-edged sound,
like maybe LIVE. However you would describe their sound, I think they're excellent
musicians (Chris Shuler is a bass master), and really do a great job. Of course,
they are among my best friends, and their zip-code contains the Devil's number,
so I may be a bit biased. - 9- <Ray> **MC9**
CAPTOR - Dogface · Diehard
I don't think these guys owe as much to PANTERA as their bio would have me believe.
It's more than enough for me to not like it, though, but I honestly think they're
closer to a less technological FEAR FACTORY. Either way, it's still crap, so
who cares? - 5 - <Ray> **MC11**
CARBONIZED - Disharmonization · Pavement / Foundation
2000
Umm, well, this may be a bit too experimental for most people. It's sort of
like PAN-THY-MONIUM, in that they are also at least this weird. But it's weird
in the good way, at least as far as I'm concerned. Are you this strange? - 8.5-
<Ray> **MC8**
CARCASS - Tools of the Trade EP · Relativity/ Earache
This four song EP has the same great production as CARCASS' last album. That
may or may not be great news. But I like it. I've always thought these guys
were a bit stuck on themselves to be so self-congratulatory as to use medical
terms they learned in college before dropping out, but you can't deny their
musical prowess. They fucking kill. And so does this EP. - 9 - <Ray> **MC7**
CARCASS - Heartwork · Columbia / Earache
The Columbia distribution deal has obviously changed all the bands involved.
Each release through Columbia has marked a turning point in the style of the
band, and CARCASS is no exception. This is, however, an excellent album, but
it is certainly not a CARCASS album: No lyrics taken from medical dictionaries,
and although still fast for the most part, the use of Blast drum beats is extremely
limited. Also the production is even more polished than their last album, which
lost them the respect of many of their earliest fans, and there is a severe
lack of musical and vocal brutality. - 8.25- <Ray> **MC8**
CARCASS - Swansong · Earache
Well, it's over. One of the best Underground Death acts in the history of existence
has broken up. I'm not 100% sure why, but if they were going to continue on
making albums like this one, then it was for the best. By no means does this
album suck, but it's simply not CARCASS. It's not the ultra fast and sick Reek
of Putrefaction CARCASS, nor is it the tuned-down, toned-up, precision Death
machine Heartwork CARCASS. But it is the last CARCASS album, and whether
or not that is cause to buy it is totally up to you. - 7.75 - <JACK> **MC10**
CARCASS - Wake Up and Smell the Carcass · Earache
This is an odd retrospective, since it only has three tracks from the band's
pre Tools of the Trade days. There are five tracks from the Swansong
sessions that are in the same Hard Rock/Metal style as that album. Next
are four somewhat heavier tracks, recorded for the BBC's Radio 1 show.
That's all the unreleased material, but the tracks from the Heartwork and
Tools of the Trade EPs are also on here, as well as the band's songs
from the Pathological and Grindcrusher compilations. Since it
has so much unreleased or hard to find material, this is nice for CARCASS fans,
but I am disappointed that there was so little material from early in the band's
career. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC10**
CARCINOGEN - Perseverance · DEMO
Four songs of Thrashy Death. Nothing really outstanding, but these guys every
now and them come up with an excellent riff. With more time, I think we'll sell
some really impressive results. - 8- <Ray> **MC9**
CARDIAC ARREST - Heart Stopping Death Rot · demo
A decent demo disc from these gore-obsessed Gialo Grinders. These guys, with a little bit more time, would fit perfectly on the Razorback roster, as they show traits of almost all their bands. Most of the necessary components are already in place. Good drumming, good raw vocals, good sound. They just need to put a little more into it. The songs just really don’t hold much interest at this point. I predict, however, a highly improved follow-up for these Midwest miscreants. - 7.25 - <Jack>

CARDINAL SIN - Infanticide · DEMO
My only complaint here is that the songs are a bit too long, they tend to lose
something because they are carried out for so long. I will say that they are
never boring. I even like the vocals. I guess CARDINAL SIN is Thrash, or something
pretty close to it. I don't care if they want to call themselves Chamber Music,
I like 'em. The cover is interesting, and lyrics are included. The demo has
five songs, the last of which, "Death of Pee Wee Herman", is pretty
strange and uses audio from Mr. Herman himself. Then they kill him. Inspiring.

CARDIOVASCULAR SUB-HYPOTHERMIA - Pulmonary Descent · DEMO
Maybe it's the yelled vocals, but I'm gonna call this Industrial Hardcore. It's
intense, like Hardcore, and has more or less those kinds of rhythms and vocals.
The drums are programmed - occasionally in a Death Metal kind of way. There
are plenty of samples and synths. It's a fuckin' weird mix of styles, but generally
it sounds pretty cool. - 8 - <Ray> **MC11**
CARICATURE - Emptiness · DEMO
The vocals remind me of PUNGENT STENCH, but the music is mostly Thrashier than
that (or maybe speedier). Anyway, this is pretty cool. - 8.25- <Ray> **MC8**
CARNAGE - Carnage · DEMO
By the noise on this tape, I'd guess that this CARNAGE must be very new indeed.
Even to their instruments. Basically this sounds like a drum machine set to
"fast," some super distorted guitar feedback, with maybe some notes
thrown in here and there, & almost constant screaming. That they attempt
to cover "We Are the Road Crew" is just too much for me to bear. I'd
say that this is probably about as bad as it gets. - 1- <Ray> **MC11**
CARNAL FORGE - Firedemon · Century Media
Is this KREATOR? I mean, is this what KREATOR should sound like now? Maybe,
and maybe not... This Death / Thrash is intense enough, no doubt about that,
but the aforementioned KREATOR always did their best to make sure that in addition
to that, their songs were memorable. And, for whatever else is this, memorable
it isn't. It's not bad, though. - 7.75 - <Ray>
CARNAL FORGE - Aren't You Dead Yet? · Century Media
This band sounds just like THE HAUNTED, except their drummer knows two
drumbeats. Impressive I'll admit, but not enough to keep me from slumber. There
are a few bands that can pull off this ultra-fast Nu-Thrash (CORPORATION 187,
DIMENSION ZERO and DARKEST HOUR if you want to put them in that category), CARNAL
FORGE just isn't one of them. So, to answer the chic album title's dapper inquiry,
I am most certainly and quite unfortunately still alive. -1.75 - <Jack>
CARNAL RAPTURE - Promo 2004 · demo
Extremely technical, richly layered, Prog-flavored Death Metal similar to latter era DEATH. Now by technical, I don't mean fast (these guys for some reason think blast beats are gay), and by Prog-flavored, I don't mean there are sissy RUSH vocals. Thankfully, there is only a Death snarl. I simply mean that the musicianship is of very high quality, and that the band features a textured approach rather than a full-on brutality attack. As impressive as the playing is (even more impressive when you consider these guys are from Italy, a country where you can count the good Metal bands on one hand), I've listened to these two songs all morning, and all that really sticks is the Classical acoustic guitar arrangement on "Next Darkest Dream." So maybe there's a little too much going on here. Nevertheless, CARNAL RAPTURE have a ton of talent and originality going for them, and that's a damn fine place to start. - 8 - <Jack>

CARNIVAL IN COAL - French Cancan · Season
of Mist
I guess this is supposed to be a "fun" joke band, but I'm not reviewing
any CD containing a PANTERA cover, even if they are making fun of them (which
I'd have to think that they are). This totally sucks anyway, though. And isn't
even funny. - 2 - <Ray>
CARNIVAL OF SHAME - Go Tell Mother · Burnin'
These guys occasionally remind me a little of the MISFITS. Sometimes it's more
like BILLY IDOL, but way more raw. Sometimes even a little like GANGREEN. Some
of the songs are brilliant, such as "Swan Dive" and "Babe Truth."
Both of which were recorded in 1990, along with only 3 other songs. The remaining
5 songs were recorded in 1988. The CD version contains 3 bonus live tracks,
which aren't nearly as exciting as the rest of the LP. I liked all of the studio
tracks, and I think the only problem this band might face is the fact that this
style sounds, to some, a bit dated. Personally, I like it. But I like a lot
of shit. CARNIVAL OF SHAME is difficult to classify as exactly one kind of music;
the song "Christine" could easily go somewhere as a single, but that
will never happen. I guess I would hate to see a thirteen-year-old trendy girl
with a C.O.S. T-shirt. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC5**
CARNIVAL OF SHAME - Tortured · Burnin'
This band combines elements of such legendary bands as the MISFITS (and DANZIG,
too), BILLY IDOL, and occasionally DEAD KENNEDYS. Musically, C.O.S. is really
interesting, although rather difficult to describe. Sometimes bordering on Thrash,
sometimes more like early Punk, and sometimes more like straight ahead Rock.
Vocally, I'm reminded of Glenn Danzig, but that's not quite all there is to
it. The vocals are more aggressive when necessary, but always fit exactly with
the music. And that is one of this band's greatest assets- they are extremely
tight. It all fits together perfectly. Another asset is that all 13 songs stick
with you. And finally, this band radiates an awesome amount of energy. I would
bet that the CARNIVAL is god live. Anyway, this LP is a bit different than their
first LP, Go Tell Mother, it's more polished, but not overdone. I really
like this LP and I think anyone with an open mind will too. Favorite tracks:
"Bad News Travels Fast" & "Naked Again." - 8.75 - <Ray>

CARPATHIAN FOREST - Strange Old Brew · Avantgarde / Mercenary
/ WWIII
These Norse Black Metal freaks obviously like bondage and domination, a lyrical
topic they tackled in their previous release, Black Shining Leather.
Well, that love hasn't diminished at all and songs like "Mask of The Slave"
and the rather humorous "The Good Old Enema Treatment" are testimonies
to how much fun they think it is. The rest of the songs are more in the vein
of traditional Black Metal of the Norse sort with lyrics about death, destruction
and general all-around evilness. The production on this album is a bit lacking
in the guitar department as the bass and drums are quite prominent but the six-string
is a little thin. A heavier guitar tone or louder volume would have helped make
the riffs a bit more distinguishable. The faster parts particularly suffer from
this as the guitars degenerate into what sounds like a chainsaw. When CARPATHIAN
FOREST slows down and gets heavy, things definitely get better. The song "Cloak
Of Midnight" in particular is really good. When they slow down, their CELTIC
FROST influences really show through and though there are a few blatantly FROST
riffs on this, they don't really hurt the band all that much. Strange Old
Brew is a solid album that only adds to CARPATHIAN FOREST's status as one
of the leading bands from Norway. - 8.5 - <Ychoril>
CARPE TENEBRUM - Mirrored Hate... · Hammerheart
If you must have an intro, I guess one that describes babies being born on Satanic
altars and then eaten alive, is probably as good as it's going to get. No one
will ever top the insane intro that started the EXODUS classic, Pleasures
of the Flesh, but this isn't bad. And then the fast Black Metal onslaught
starts up, strengthened by the excellent production. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC12**
CARRION LORD - All Paths Lead to Chaos · DEMO
Shit, these guys blew me away! I love this demo. The singer is awesome. He sounds
like the dude from DEVIATED INSTINCT. All the songs are good, but the best is
"Consumed by Rot." One song is even an instrumental. The production
isn't that great, but this is still one of the best. - 8.25 - <Tom> **MC7**
CASBAH - Demo 1992 · DEMO
Fairly straight forward Thrash with yelled vocals. The four songs are all catchy
and this is produced well. I dig it. If you like Thrash at all, check this out
- it beaks no new ground, but it's pretty cool. - 8- <Ray> **MC8**
CASBAH - March of the Final Decade · DEMO
This is an improvement over their 1992 demo, in that they have lost none of
their Thrash intensity, but gained a lot more memorability. The somewhat strange,
but very powerful and clear, production helps them, but they mostly just know
how to write good riffs, and they cram these three songs full of them. Taka's
vocals are yelled with more energy than ever before, and everyone's playing
has improved as well. An outstanding demo, that, if there were any justice in
the world, would get them signed in a second. - 9.25- <Ray> **MC9**
CASBAH - Casbah · DEMO
CASBAH just keep getting better and better. The production is thick & heavy,
the riffs memorable, the vocals low & raspy. 'Nuff said? Not yet. This band's
Thrash is in a class by itself, and just when you think you understand, they'll
do something unexpected, but always cool. Their greatest strength, though, is
their ability to write such extremely catchy songs. Seriously, each of these
8 tracks worms its way into your brain and just stays there. I really don't
understand why these guys aren't signed. - 9.5 - <Ray> **MC10**
CASBAH
- Bold Statement · Roadrunner
Unfortunately this Thrash masterpiece is only available in Japan. Roadrunner
U.S.A. wake the fuck up! I have loved all of CASBAH's demos, but this finally
sees them with a production that perfectly combines their crushing heaviness,
"thickness" and clarity. In other words, a production worthy of their
excellence. This is ultra-memorable intense Thrash at it's most neck-breaking.
CASBAH are true masters of their instruments, but never resort to showing off,
preferring instead to write massive riffs and great songs. Taka's vocals are
just as thick as the music, maybe due to his accent, and also raw, but in a
controlled way. He is instantly recognizable, which is itself sort of amazing.
I've listened to this over and over, maybe 20 times (and knew the songs before
then) trying to find a flaw - any flaw. There are none. To my Japanese brothers
must now go the highest of all possible honors. - 10 - <Ray> **MC11**
CASBAH - Dinosaurs · Roadrunner
Not quite as perfect as Bold Statement, but this is a collection of older
stuff from these Thrash masters, and not a new album. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC11**

JOHNNY CASH - American Recordings · American
Here's a review I'm sure you didn't expect to see in this zine. But here's the
deal: Nearly all of the songs on this album are pretty cool, and some are amazing.
My favorite is Cash's cover of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire." By
the way, this is almost totally not a Country album. Generally these songs are
more Folk, with an occasional nod to Country at most. Cash has a very powerful
and haunting voice, and puts it to amazing use here. Many of these tracks were
written for him (including one by Danzig) or are covers, but the ones he wrote
are among the coolest. Don't miss hearing this. - 8.25 - <Ray> **MC8**
CAST IRON HIKE - Watch it Burn · Victory
At just over an hour, this is one of the longest releases on Victory. I would
have much rather heard longer albums from most of the other Victory bands, but
CIH aren't too bad. They sound like a slightly Hardcore version of FLOTSAM AND
JETSAM, right down to the vox. - 7.75 - <Ray> **MC11**
CASTIGADOR - Demo 2003 · demo
Running out of band names are we? Not much in the way of musical ideas either. A MAIDEN-minded approach to symphonic Black Metal with a production beyond faint is rarely what the doctor ordered. Often bordering on cheesy, this 3-song CDR doesn’t have a ton going for it. A few moments of respectability, but for the most part a feeble attempt. - 6.5 - <Jack>

CASTRUM - Hatenourisher · Bloodbucket
Other than the extremely rare lame high-pitched scream, this is a fine example
of memorable Death Metal. - 8.25 - <Ray>
CATACLYSM - Sudden Violent Change · DEMO
These guys are not afraid of a little Gore in their lyrics - that can be good,
and it certainly is here. Very brutal vocals, but the music is a little more
refined - still plenty raw, though, and the vocals are like puked up ground
glass (that's cool). A good production and memorable songs top this off. - 9-

CATACOMB - Free Demo 1990 · DEMO
CATACOMB consists of: Andy Cauble (guitar), Kerry Keith (vocals), Tim Killough
(bass), John Marlow (drums). They are a rather interesting band. Although this
is not the best recording (it was done on a four track) or mix, you can still
tell that these are good songs. CATACOMB is neither extremely heavy or exceptionally
fast, but they have something going for them that a lot of other bands seem
to be missing: the songs are catchy. All four songs are easy to get into. My
personal favorite is "T.H.S." CATACOMB reminds me somewhat of early
SUICIDAL TENDENCIES. They have the will and determination and are good with
their respective instruments. All they need is your support and a larger budget.
And yes, this demo is free, you just pay for the postage. So what do you have
to lose, ya freaks? They also have very cool stickers!! - 8 - <Ray>
{As mentioned elsewhere, in the comments for the GHOST STORY review, this band
didn't last long after this release, and Andy Cauble teamed up with his brother,
Chris, to form the band MONSTER, which released one demo and then disappeared.}

CATACOMB - The Lurker at the Threshold · DEMO
These four songs are instantly deadly. Raw, powerful Death vocals, and memorable,
ominous music. This comes off sounding sorta Black Metal, but I don't know what
the band would have to say about that (the liner notes do say, "Give your
prayer to Satan"). I guess I'll have to send them an interview. Anyway,
don't miss out on this. - 8.75- <Ray> **MC8**
CATASEXUAL URGE MOTIVATION - The Encyclopedia of Serial Murders ·
Deliria
Any band who covers IMPETIGO ("Defiling the Grave") has got to be
cool. C.U.M. are certainly no exception, as the ferocity of their ultra-fast
Grinding Death is matched by the insanely raw vocals. Extremity at its sickest
- you've got to like that. - 9 - <Ray> **MC10**
CATASEXUAL URGE MOTIVATION - The Encyclopedia of Serial Murders ·
Razorback
I reviewed the original release of this album (on Deliria Records) back in issue
#10 [see above]. This reissue features new packaging, but no extra music, so
if you already have the first version, there's no need to get this one. However,
if you don't already own this and you're a fan of super-brutal and super-sick
Death / Grind (including a great IMPETIGO cover), in this case from Japan, you'd
be well advised to check this out. - 9 - <Ray>
CATASEXUAL URGE MOTIVATION - Nekronicle · Razorback
Not quite sure how essential this release this. About 95% of these songs have
already seen the light of day on previous C.U.M. releases, many of which can
be found on 2000’s The Encyclopedia of Serial Killers and various comps,
EPs, or splits, and what little unreleased stuff there is isn’t much to write
home about. Some of them are alternate versions, but do you really care? I don’t.
I’m not saying I don’t like these Japanese Gore-Grind freaks. Their bowel-rotting
assault would be up the alley of any gore hound, especially recommended for
fans of MORTICIAN, GUT, or even SQUASH BOWELS. I just don’t see the necessity
for a "greatest hits" from such an obscure, short-lived act. - 8.25

CATASTROPHIC - The Cleansing · Metal Blade
When I heard that Trevor (OBITUARY) Perez had teamed up with NY Death Metal
band PYREXIA to form CATASTROPHIC, I knew I'd be in for a treat, but I didn't
really expect something of this magnitude. Within the realm of Death, they cover
all the bases, and these guys are very clever in their use of speed, often keeping
things at a slower, heavier, and dare I say it, more groove-influenced, pace,
although the songs are kept short. That, mixed with bursts of high-tempo drumming,
makes these songs extremely memorable and durable. What all this means of course,
is that The Cleansing is an awesome slab of old-meets-new Death Metal, featuring
the added bonus of Keith DeVito's utterly flawless vocals. This will certainly
end up as one of the best albums of the year. - 9.75 - <Ray>
CATATONIC EXISTENCE - I'll Kill You All 7" · Psychomania

Pretty simple riffs and a basic drum machine beat destroy even the best samples.

CATHARSIS - Under Threatening Skies · DEMO
I really like Doug's vocals, although they are hard to describe. Sometimes he
gets in a more Death-like tone, but usually it's a gargley yell. Trust me, it's
cool. Musically, this is fast Deathrash, with the occasional great riff, but
really it's the massive energy they deliver that makes them stand out. - 8.25-

CATHEDRAL - Forest of Equilibrium · Relativity/Earache
Did you expect Lee Dorian's new band to sound exactly like NAPALM DEATH? Wrong!
This stuff is slow, kids. I'm talking Doom, with a capital "D." One
word of warning: if you listen to this straight through, you will probably go
insane. Take it a few tracks at a time. Now, don't get me wrong, in no way am
I knocking this disc, but holy shit, Batman! This stuff is slow! I like it!
My favorites are "Ebony Tears" and "Soul Sacrifice." NAPALM
DEATH it ain't, and a new wave of music it is. - 7 - <John T> **MC7**
CATHEDRAL - Soul Sacrifice EP · Columbia/ Earache
The title track has been re-recorded for this EP & is noticeably different,
as are Lee's vox: they are way less raw and I guess at least double tracked.
This vocal style takes some getting used to. Also, the drums are simpler than
I would expect - not as much double bass. In fact, this EP is way less Death
or Doom than I was expecting. I guess that's Columbia's influence. Too bad.
"Autumn Twilight" & "Frozen Rapture" both kill god,
but the other two tracks barely give him pause. I wonder what their next full
length LP will sound like... - 7.5 - <Ray> **MC7**
CATHEDRAL - The Ethereal Mirror · Earache / Columbia
Lee Dorian is a lucky man. First he sings in what is probably the greatest Grindcore
band of all time: NAPALM DEATH. Now in the 90's he sings in CATHEDRAL, which
sounds kind of 70-ish, but is still 90-ish. Confused yet? If this is the first
time you hear CATHEDRAL, you'll probably say, "They sound just like BLACK
SABBATH." Yeah, so what? I couldn't think of a better band to be compared
to. SABBATH ruled the 70's (fuck ZEPPLIN!), and now CATHEDRAL shall rule the
90's (fuck Grunge!). You want real Alternative? Well then, burn your flannels
and worship CATHEDRAL. - 8.75- <John T> **MC8**
CATHEDRAL - The Carnival Bizarre · Earache
This is supposedly the union of their ultra heavy Forest of Equilibrium and
the Groove-powered The Ethereal Mirror. Well, it's a little light on
the Doom side, but does have a certain Mr. Iommi playing on one of the songs.
Not bad. - 8 - <Ray> **MC9**
CATHEDRAL - Hopkins EP · Earache
While the title track is one of my favorite songs from The Carnival Bizarre,
the 4 songs that accompany it are the ultimate in queerocity. There is absolutely
no need whatsoever to purchase this if you already own Carnival... I
know I'd be one pissed off motherfucker when I got this one home. Please take
my word on this one. $12-$15 is way too much to pay for one ass wipe. - 5 -

CATHEDRAL - Supernatural Birth Machine · Earache
Some of these tracks are the most blatant SABBATH rip-offs I've ever heard,
but I'm just glad to hear that there is some heaviness on this disc. In fact
there is very little of their goofy 70s worship, and I'm damn glad to see that
it got cut away. As much as I hate to say it, I think that Lee's vocals are
holding them back. They are distinct and instantly recognizable, but I think
that he tries too hard to walk the line between "really" singing and
having a rough edge, and it works less and less with every album. - 7.5 - <Ray>
**MC10**
CATHEDRAL - Caravan Beyond Redemption · Earache
Despite the somewhat goofy first song, "Voodoo Fire," this might be
the best CATHEDRAL since the flawless debut, Forest of Equilibrium. Lee
seems to finally be 100% comfortable with singing, and doesn't really even try
to have the raw edge to his voice anymore, which was a really good idea, by
the way. The music is still very groove oriented, but possesses more heaviness
(and a thick guitar tone), so the "Doom" label is not totally misplaced,
as it has been on occasion in their past. If only all of this had been as great
as "The Unnatural World" and "Satanikus Robotikus," it might
have recaptured their earlier perfection - although, obviously in a much different
way. - 8.75 - <Ray> **MC12**
CATHEDRAL - In Memoriam · TMC / Rise Above
Here we have the re-release of this legendary demo, with five live bonus tracks.
While you wouldn't know it from listening to them these days, but back in 1990
(when the studio tracks were recorded - the live stuff is from '91) CATHEDRAL's
Doom was fairly "groove-less" and much slower and heavier than it
is today. In other words, it was better. I consider their first album, Forest
of Equilibrium, to be not only their best, but an all time classic. This
demo recording sees them at virtually the same peak, and with the addition of
the live material (although not exactly flawlessly recorded), this is close
to perfection. - 9.75 - <Ray>
CATHEDRAL - Endtyme · Earache
Holy fucking Hell on fire! The disc-opener, "Cathedral Flames," is
an unbelievably heavy throwback to the Forest of Equilibrium days that
had me ready to change my entire rating scale so that I could give this album
an 11. When the second track started, I knew this was still a classic, but my
venerable rating scale was in no danger of rearrangement - although just barely.
Lee seems to understand that a somewhat more restrained vocal style can be a
big plus, and these songs see him going back in time to an approach similar
to that used on the Soul Sacrifice EP. Some complete assholes will probably
say that this album represents a "step back" for the band, but that's
pure insanity, and anyone who would say otherwise is an idiot. Endtyme
is clearly the result of a look back over the years to see what worked the best
for this band, and a synthesis of those styles and influences into a sometimes
depressing, sometimes rocking, sometimes groovy, sometimes retro sound. Personally,
I have always liked the Doom elements of CATHEDRAL the best, and this is their
heaviest since their flawless debut. It's also a more individual sort of heaviness,
and likewise for the "groovy" parts. The rather obvious BLACK SABBATH
worship of the past is mostly gone, and their sound is more entirely their own.
I understand that they have various styles that they like and want to include,
and of course also fans of the different facets of their musical personality,
but as far as I'm concerned, if all the songs had been as brutally heavy as
the instrumental first track, or even the oppressive Doom slow-motion suicide
of "Requiem for the Sun," or the beyond-heavy bits of "Ultra
Earth," this would have been as easy 10. The less Doomy songs, such as
"Whores to Oblivion," are also improved from past releases, making
this, I guess, the most complete and versatile CATHEDRAL album yet. - 9.5 -

CATHETER - Preamble to Oblivion · Selfmadegod
Take a ton of SPAZZ, a dash of ANAL CUNT, and a smidge of old CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER and you've got CATHETER. Do they pack the same punch as their influences? Not really. But this is extremely intense, spastic Powerviolence, and the stuff doesn't grow on trees. If SPAZZ, LACK OF INTEREST, ASSHOLE PARADE, or even ENGORGED is your thing, these guys are highly capable of producing the same results (and sampling Airplane and Conan the Barbarian in the same song is just cool). Features a decent cover of NAPALM DEATH's "Unchallenged Hate," and the lyrics to "Korn Bisqit" are priceless. - 8 - <Jack>
CATHOLICON - Lost Chronicles of the War.. · Underworld
Freaky intro. What's odd is that the guitars sound good, the drums sound okay,
but when everything, including keyboards, vocals, and bass, is put together
it doesn't sound quite as good. These guys are scribes of Satan's conquests.
Black throughout. Scratchy screaming vocals to boot. Usually slower auditory
evil with some faster parts. I think they kill more with their slower riffs
like in "Eve Bewitched," which is confusing to find an upbeat track
such as "Ashes of Eden" right after. It's a soulful keyboard and guitar
tune. But Satan doesn't really have a soul, it's more like a black hole where
gravity sucks in and crushes all the souls of hypocrites and the damned. It
probably helps if you visualize the rain sounds as raining blood for that song.
Maybe these guys can't decide whether they're Black and at war with Christianity
or just
happy. As a chronicle, the movements flow together seamlessly,
with highlights being the sludge slower parts. But somehow it all slowly runs
out of steam. Favorite track, "Thorns of the Crown." - 7 - <Bob>

CAUSE FOR ALARM / WARZONE - Split · Victory
CAUSE FOR ALARM are Hardcore, and do an excellent job of it. They give 100%
at all times - it's easy to tell. I'm somewhat surprised by their use of the
very Metal double bass drum technique, but I love it. These guys are awesome.
And, guess what? WARZONE are just as good as C.F.A. Both these bands know to
make their music memorable as well as intense, and WARZONE have the added bonus
of The Kid on bass - he does some very cool stuff. And I appreciate and agree
with their lyrics, too. For example, from "Do You Know What You're Fighting
For?": "I hear you use all the right words, Even look the part - Maybe
you spiked your hair or shaved your head, got that hardcore look, but you got
it from a book." I'm embarrassed to admit that this was the first I'd heard
of these bands, but I plan on finding out a lot more about them. - 9.75- <Ray>

CAUSE FOR ALARM - Cheaters and the Cheated · Victory
Every bit as impressive as their split with WARZONE, these guys continue to
amaze me. Every song is extremely catchy, flawlessly played, and heavy. Victory
seems to spare no expense on recording budgets, since this, like all their other
releases, sounds great. The thick production owes more to Metal than Hardcore,
and C.F.A. don't seem to be afraid to use some traditionally Metal drumming,
but they are all 'core. This is close to being perfect, and has definitely put
C.F.A. in the running for best Hardcore band, but the competition is fierce.

CAUSE FOR ALARM - Birth After Birth EP · Victory
First of all, I'm not completely certain if this is considered by the band and/or
label to be an EP, but it's only got 6 tracks and is about 27 minutes long,
so that says EP to me. Anyway, I remember their nearly flawless last album,
Cheaters and the Cheated, as being a little heavier than this, and a
little less strictly Punk sounding. Still, Birth... is very catchy and
the production is nothing short of amazing. I must admit to liking their more
aggressive sound better, but one is hard pressed to find much to complain about
here. - 9 - <Ray> **MC11**
CAUSTIC - Rebirth of Procreation · Jackhammer
Very straight-froward, CANNIBAL CORPSE inspired Death Metal, with some DISMEMBER-ish
touches, as well. After several listens, I find that I like this rather short
(28 minutes) album, but there is little that really stands out - certainly nothing
bad - to merit, or even enable, a longer review. - 7.75 - <Ray>
CAUSTIC BUTCHERY - Offerings to the Overseer · DEMO
This demo sounds great. The production is powerful, and clear, but the songs
aren't really very memorable, and they are completely over-shadowed by the truly
raw vocals. However, they do have a handle on the "brutality" aspect
of Death Metal, so if that's all you need, then these are they guys. - 7.75-

You'd never in a billion years guess it by looking at the art work or song titles,
but this is (for the most part) pretty heavy Sludge. Sort of like GRIEF, but
I think that CAVITY arrived at this point having travelled a different path.
There are some parts when the speed is kicked up to "pretty fast"
but the layers of feedback are just as crushing. More than worth a listen. -
8.5 - <Ray> **MC11**
CELEBRATUM - Instinct · Metal Age
Fast, hateful Black Metal that lays it all on the line, yet still ends up sounding like third string MARDUK and DARK FUNERAL. They have the ability to play fast and not much else. Melodies are attempted, but it just doesn’t work. Aside from the speed, there is nothing memorable to speak of. Indecipherable riffs and grating, throaty vocals ensure I’m bored to death two minutes into the third song. - 6.5 - <Jack>
CELESTIAL FEAR - Do You Want to Die? · DEMO
The singer sounds like a ball-less version of James Hetfield (as if Jaymz still
had balls), and that may be the best part. I have penetrated the depths of anti-production
and buried guitar to locate the songs, and it wasn't worth the effort. I could
tell you which SLAYER tunes originally contained these riffs, but I won't waste
the space. - 5- <Ray> **MC9**
CELESTIAL SEASON - Solar Lovers · Displeased
This album is everything every Doom/Death band has ever promised to be - to
the tenth power. Heavier than all comers, more emotional than any, save MY DYING
BRIDE, or AVERNUS. I had thought that the final word had been written on Atmospheric
Doom when Turn Loose the Swans was released, and then I was proven wrong
by AVERNUS' Sadness demo, and now CELESTIAL SEASON. If there is a better
Doom album than this, I must hear it, although I honestly do not understand
how anyone could improve on Solar Lovers (other than by leaving off the
experimental last track, for which I was forced to reduce the rating a little
bit). I guess this will make it pretty hard to write an album to follow this
masterpiece. I am anxiously awaiting the attempt! Note: This is now available
through Metal Blade here in the U.S.A. - 9.5- <Ray> **MC9**
CELESTIAL SEASON - Sonic Orb EP · Displeased
Following the path of CATHEDRAL, this EP sees the once mighty CELESTIAL SEASON
get too much Groove for their own good. And the new singer, Cyril, who never
uses the Death growl, sounds a bit like that dork from ALICE IN CHAINS sometimes.
Thankfully the music is still interesting, if not really heavy. I think that
if a band changes their sound this much, that they should also change their
name. - 7.75- <Ray> **MC9**
CELESTIAL SORROW - Despair Within Me · demo
It’s just plain wrong when a band uses a good Doom name but do not play Doom. It’s downright misleading. Especially when the band in question is just another of countless groups doing the Gothenberg thing. Granted, I assume this quintet is from Finland because each band member’s name ends in -en and contains 12 "k"s and 20 "i"s. Their melodies and musicianship do show potential, but there is nothing strong enough to work its way into my pleasure center yet. - 7 - <Jack>

CELTIC FROST - Parched With Thirst am I... And Dying ·
Noise
How many of you were big FROST fans until Cold Lake? I too was shocked
with hearing that tape. After that came Vanity/Nemesis, which was a valiant
effort to help CELTIC FROST, but it wasn't enough. So now here comes a greatest
hits, sort of. It does contain great songs like "The Usurper" and
"Circle of the Tyrants," but it also has "Cherry Orchards".
What the fuck is that?!? In no way should that be on a CELTIC FROST greatest
hits album. That song should be inducted into the CELTIC FROST hall of shame.
FROST was, once, one of the best bands around, but those days are over good
people. Great, now I'm depressed. I think I'll go listen to Morbid Tales
a few thousand times. - 6.5 - <John T> **MC7**
CEMETARY - An Evil Shade of Grey · Cargo/ Black Mark
Recorded at Sunlight and has the occasional eerie keyboard part. This is certainly
not the most original sound (although they sound almost nothing like ENTOMBED/
DISMEMBER/ CARNAGE), but who cares? It's great! Brutal Death Metal, in case
you couldn't figure it out. Extremely impressive debut. I really have nothing
negative to say. Keep up the good work guys! Favorite tracks: "Scars"
and "Nightmare Lake." - 9.25 - <Ray> **MC7**
CEMETARY - Godless Beauty · Black Mark / Cargo
Where their debut, An Evil Shade of Grey, was more traditional, this
is experimental. And that was the only missing element that kept the first album
from being perfect. Unfortunately, some of the rawness was lost in the translation,
but the new incorporating of some TIAMAT-like Doom / Rock influences more than
makes up for it. - 9.75- <Ray> **MC8**
CEMETARY - Sundown · Black Mark
Albums like this really annoy the fuck out of me! The riffs are excellent; raw
and melodic in the style of early to mid PARADISE LOST. But the vox are pure
torment to sit through. I'm reminded of everything from Janie Lane to Paul Stanley
to Sebastian Bach to Kip fucking Winger! (If none of these names sound familiar,
you'd probably rather I didn't tell you what bands they are from. Just trust
me, the vocals suck) If Aaron of MY DYING BRIDE, Nike of PARADISE LOST, or just
about any other good Doom singer was on the mic here, this would be an easy
ten. - 7.5 - <Jack> **MC10**
CEMETERY OF SCREAM - Deeppression · Serenades
Death Rock. Gothic Metal. Whatever you call this supposedly dark stuff. Sure
these guys overload on melancholy and depression, but the SENTENCED-like Rock
bits disturb the ominous feeling of the rest. Actually, this album is pretty
good, if you like TIAMAT, the aforementioned SENTENCED, or their ilk. Plus C.
OF S. try some weird stuff every now and then, which almost qualifies them to
be "experimental," and they also sometimes use Death-style vocals.
Not the greatest thing I've ever heard, but pretty interesting. - 8 - <Ray>
**MC11**
CENOTAPH - The Gloomy Reflections of Our Hidden Sorrow ·
Innsmouth
Amazing. I'm always impressed when I hear something a little different, and
CENOTAPH certainly qualify. They combine pretty extreme brutality with atmospheric
elements and even great lyrics. The production is also unique: Somewhat raw,
but in the good way. Check this out. - 9.5 - <Ray> **MC8**
CENOTAPH - Voluptuously Minced · Hammer
This is so fucking sick and intense Death Metal, that even the most jaded fan
will have to be impressed by their ability and extremity. I sure as Hell am.
- 9.5 - <Ray> **MC11**
CENTINEX - Malleus Maleficarum · Wild Rags
I believe that this disc compiles tracks from the band's most recent two demos.
The recording was done at Unisound and Abyss, so you are assured of high quality
sound to go with the aggressive Thrashy Death. These Swedes may not stray too
far from the path of traditional Death Metal, but why fix what's not broken?
Easy to remember, yet brutal to the last drop of blood. - 8.5 - <Ray>
**MC10**
CENTINEX - Reflections · Diehard / Emanzipation
I was really looking forward to this release, and was pleasantly surprised upon
my first listen. Everything has improved: The writing, the playing, the production,
the vox, the intensity - everything. They must be very happy with this razor-sharp
slab of Death Metal. - 9.25 - <Ray> **MC11**
CENTINEX - Reborn Through Flames · Repulse
To those of you who might think that using a drum machine in Death Metal sounds
queer, may I present proof otherwise: Reborn Through Flames. Not only
have CENTINEX perfected the art of writing memorable songs that spare no brutality,
but they're also geniuses at drum programming. Admittedly, this isn't the most
brutal thing I've ever heard, but it is one of the best. Brutality is important,
but it can only get you so far. I have to be able to remember the songs. CENTINEX
go that one further and even make the vocals uniquely awesome. You immediately
know who you're listening to, and you're immediately impressed. Here's one for
the vaults. - 9.75 - <Ray> **MC12**
CENTINEX - Bloodhunt EP · Repulse
More ass kicking Death, this time featuring a somewhat revamped line up, including
a new singer. I guess nothing can stop these guys! This is also available as
a 10" picture disc from Oskorei Productions of Norway. - 9.5 - <Ray>
**MC12**
CENTINEX - Shadowland 7" · Oskorei
As a fan of CENTINEX and their intense, memorable Death Metal, I'm always glad
to see any new stuff from these guys, but I think that only the title track
here is new, with the other cut, "Eternal Lies" also being found on
their Malleus Maleficarum MCD, so I'm not sure how mandatory this 7"
is. But, like I said, I'm a fan, so I'm glad to have it, even if it is just
the songs on a CDR "promo copy." - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC12**
CENTINEX - Hellbrigade · Repulse
It's always a good day when a new CENTINEX album arrives. Hellbrigade
sees the band speeding through nine tracks of might be called somewhat more
Black Metal influenced compositions. Nothing really groundbreaking to be found
here, but it's all extremely well executed and produced. - 8.5 - <Ray>
CENTINEX - Decadence - Prophecies of Cosmic Chaos · Candlelight
Hard to believe these guys have been toiling since 1990. It’s 2004 and these
guys still write Death Metal like they just opened Sunlight. Not much has changed
with the CENTINEX attack. Fast, heavy, melodic Death blending all kinds of countrymate
influence. From ENTOMBED and DISMEMBER to AT THE GATES and IN FLAMES, it’s quite
an effective amalgam. Okay, so maybe this time around they’ve succumbed to a
few modern tactics (occasional clean vocals, slower tempos, more dynamics, melodic
choruses a la HYPOCRISY), but it does breathe some new life into their sound,
and if it can gain this criminally underrated band a little notoriety it’s well
worth it. Here’s to CENTINEX for another solid effort and perhaps a long overdue
breakthrough. - 9 - <Jack>
CENTURIAN - Of Purest Fire · Full Moon
Evil Death with MORBID ANGEL and INQUISITOR covers. - 8.75 - <Ray> **MC11**
- "Last Second Additions"
CENTURIAN - Choronzonic Chaos Gods · Full Moon
Every once in a while a Death Metal band comes along with an album that just
completely raises the standards for a brutal, Satanic masterpiece. Where does
this album rank in the Halls of Time? How about the first DEICIDE album? How
about Blessed are the Sick? HYPOCRISY's Osculum Obscenum? Or pick
a fucking SINISTER album. No joke, people; this album is the shit personified.
Each track is filled to the brim with guitar riffs that attack with full force.
Not too technical, in no way pedestrian, and they're memorable. These guys constantly
use speed as a weapon, and it never gets old. Breakdowns are great - I love
'em to death - however, CENTURIAN doesn't need them. They reach the highland
through blazing full force beginning to end. And it never begins to dull. The
vocals are essentially bestial and deep with ultra-Satanic lyrics. And, by the
way, I'm getting a little tired of so-called "critics" bitching about
satanic lyrics. If you have a problem with Satanic lyrics, be true to yourself:
Sell your old SLAYER albums, go pick up a copy of Metal Rules, and eat
a falafel for Christ. This is an album that makes the skip button an unnecessary
feature. This will have kids with no hair headbanging, and by the end of the
release you will have become an air guitar virtuoso. A modern day Death Metal
classic, no argument. - 10 - <Jack>
CENTURIAN - Liber Zar Zax · Century Media / Olympic
For those of you unfamiliar with Dutch Death masters CENTURIAN, just try to
imagine the fastest, most ripping, shredding, vile MORBID ANGEL / DEICIDE worship
this side of ANGELCORPSE. Unfortunately, Liber Zar Zax is not the best
place to start. Though this record does have its moments like "Heading
for Holocaust" and "Ritually Slaughtered for Satan," not to mention
its fair share of precious lyrical blasphemy ("Christians were born to
be smashed / Beat them to death with their bible / Their god is a cockroach,
made in their image"), it just cannot live up to the standard set by Of
Purest Fire (1997) and Choronzonic Chaos Gods (1999). For one, I
miss departed vocalist Seth van de Loo, even though his replacement, Jerry Brouwer,
is almost a dead ringer with the same style. But most of all, this album suffers
from a lackluster production. A sound so muddy and low that the instruments
are stifled, creating a mundane atmosphere in which the constant speed becomes
redundant. In summary, there are some gems here, but a tough album to listen
to all the way through. -8.25- <Jack>
CENTURIES OF DECEPTION - Heic Noenun Pax EP · Blood Fire
Death
I have to at least respect the effort of this one-man Black Metal project, but
I'm afraid the result falls very short of convincing. The riffs are repetitive
and dull, the drum machine is programmed very badly, the vocals are weak and
unintentionally humorous, and the overall 4-track production just doesn't do
a whole lot of awe inspiring. I'm sure this will be marketed as "obscure,"
but the only thing mysterious about these four tracks is why a label of any
size would actually want to release this. I could think of a few better ways
to piss some money away that would not result in public humiliation. Some people
try too hard to fit in I guess. - 3 - <Jack> **MC12**
CEPHALIC CARNAGE - Conforming to Abnormality · Headfucker
Apparently these guys are "100% pure Hydro Grind." Well, I don't know
about the band, but whoever designed their, let's just say, very colorful CD
booklet must have been higher than the moon, as its interior is completely impossible
to read with an unaltered consciousness. As for the music, it is unrelenting
Grind, and the vox are awesomely raw -to the point of gurgles sometimes. And
they use one of the same samples my band, ADVERSARY, used on our first album.
Obviously they have good taste. So, how could you not like these guys? - 9 -
<Ray> **MC12**
CERBERUS - Infernal Creations · DEMO
These guys are now known as SYMPHONY OF GRIEF. Anyway, this demo is basically
slow Death, with a few speedier parts. Super raw vocals and all that. Pretty
fucking heavy, I'd say. - 8.5- <Ray> **MC8**
CEREBRAL EFFUSION - Violence in Motion · Unmatched Brutality
This is a decent offering of brutal, guttural Death Metal. It does tend to become
a little boring, and nothing new is brought to the table, which is understandable.
It doesn't have to be groundbreaking to rule, but I just don't see this standing
any test of time, whether it's ten years or ten minutes. They could eventually
become great, but for now, the bar is raised a little too high. - 6.75 - <Jack>
CEREBRAL EFFUSION - Smashed & Splattered Organs · Goregiastic
Extremely brutal, guttural Death/Grind from Spain. Whirlwinds of pummeling bestiality collide with demonically deep gurgles, and the ferocity never lets up. The listener is kept interested, one of the biggest challenges for a band this heavy. The only thing that prevents perfection is weak, muddy production, which shouldn’t take anything away from the band itself, yet somehow does. Still, all of those underground sickos scouring the internet for the newest, most brutal shit out there would do well to give CEREBRAL EFFUSION a download. Or, just plain old recommended purchases for fans of DEEDS OF FLESH, DISGORGE, and MORTAL DECAY. - 9.25 - <Jack>
CEREBRAL FIX - Tower of Spite · Roadrunner
CEREBRAL FIX. Interesting name. This bunch plays something between Death and
Thrash. Their vocalist, Simon Forrest, is not really raw enough for his vocals
to be considered Death, nor do his vocals sound like Thrash. That is, the vocals
are kind of screamed and growled. Not a bad idea, but it's just not done too
well. The music, however, is heavy enough. Sometimes they pull off a really
good tune, such as "Forgotten Genocide." For the most part, this album
is pretty average, with nothing really standing out, except the aforementioned
track. It does have it's moments, but they are fleeting, and a few really cool
lines or riffs can't make an entire LP. - 7- <Ray>
{Not much to report here. C.F. had at least one more album after this, and then
disappeared for awhile. I believe that they may have somewhat recently released
a new LP, but that's unconfirmed...} **MC4**
CEREBRAL TURBULENCY - As Gravy · Leviathan (Czech Republic)
Ultra-heavy traditional Death Grind. The lyrics are not as gory as I would have
thought from the artwork, and the music not quite as straightforward. C.T. take
a few chances by breaking form the constant speed, and trying out some quirky
ideas. Somehow it almost always seems to work for them. - 8.25 - <Ray>
**MC11**
CEREBRAL TURBULENCY - Germ of Error · Khaaranus Productions
Blistering, hyper-speed Grindcore which will appease fans of everything from old NAPALM DEATH and AGATHOCLES to GROINCHURN or ROTTEN SOUND. Granted if you’re a longtime Grind patron, other than a few insane timing quirks and melodic oddities, there’s not much here you haven’t heard before, but it’s creative, fast, brutal, and in-your-fucking-face, and you either crave this stuff or you don’t. These Czech bedlamites cook up as fine a dish as anyone. Bon appetit. - 8.5 - <Jack>
CEREBROCIDE - Delusion · Cudgel Agency
Solid Death Metal from Germany. Nothing mind blowing or superb, but they are
tight, fast enough, musical, and heeeeavy. - 8 - <Bob>
CEREMONIUM - Nightfall in Heaven 7" · Necroharmonic
Dark and heavy, but not really Doom, although these two tracks are often slow.
This style works really well for them, and the addition of the really raw vocals
only helps. The cool purple vinyl is a nice touch. - 8.75- <Ray> **MC8**
CEREMONIUM - Into the Autumn Shade · Fadeless
This will fucking crush your soul. Into the Autumn Shade is the most
powerful Doom I've heard since SKEPTICISM's flawless Stormcrowfleet.
CEREMONIUM occasionally speed up a little, or take a more excruciated vocal
approach, but these vehement alterations only serve to highlight the destructive
force of their masterful style. - 9.75 - <Ray> **MC10**
CEREMONIUS - Morbid Intent · DEMO
Cool intro. Very good, and thick, production. Wow, are those vocals?!? Fuck,
that's sick! Low-end vomited distortion, and the occasional high shriek. Extremely
brutal Death. This will kill you. - 9.25- <Ray> **MC8**
CEREMONY - Tyranny From Above · Cyber Music
This stays on the faster side of Death, the vocals are a hellpowered chainsaw,
and yet somehow it's incredibly memorable. That must have a lot to do with the
fact that this is one of the best produced extreme Death records I've ever heard.
I want my band to record wherever these guys did. This is monstrously awesome.
I can't recommend this enough. - 9.75 - <Ray> **MC8**
PAUL CHAIN - Alkahest · Godhead
That Lee Dorian (CATHEDRAL) lends his vocal talents to 5 of these songs (4 as
lead vocalist) comes as no surprise to me. He's perfect for the job, and I'd
imagine that CATHEDRAL was more than a little inspired by the old-style Doom
works of Mr. Chain. The only thing that bothers me about this recording at all
is Paul's insane phonetic language. What he sings are not words in any language,
but rather sounds constructed to fit the music. It seems like a great idea,
but if you even try to listen to what he's singing, you instantly lose your
mind. And his voice is enchanting, so you're compelled to attempt to figure
what he's saying, forgetting for a moment that's it's nothing, and then the
next thing you know you're locked in a padded cell, drooling all over yourself.
- 9.25 - <Ray> **MC9**
PAUL CHAIN - Park of Reason · Beyond Productions
"Master of Doom" my ass! Slo-mo, tenth rate Hippie Doom that defiantly refuses
to go anywhere. This is for that stoner that got a bad batch of shrooms and
never came down. - 1 - <Jack>
CHAINED AND DESPERATE - Oracles From the Neitherworld ·
DEMO
Atmospheric and melancholy Metal in the Greek style, combining Thrash, Doom,
Black Metal together. At times fast and intense, while others very depressing
and sorrowful. The excellent sound is the final element to make this a must.

CHAINED AND DESPERATE - 11 Angels in a Circle · DEMO (CD)
This is a very cool combination of various Metal styles. Musically, it's Thrashy
melodic Death that can also be very atmospheric and Doomy. The vox are raw,
but sort of more in a Black Metal way. I'm not sure how much they're charging
for this 40+ minute disc, but you'd be nuts to miss it. - 9.25 - <Ray>

CHAINSAW - Into the Pit · demo
Sometimes I get too excited when I see a band is from Sweden. I mean, it’s the country with the highest output of quality Extreme Music in the world for fuck’s sake. Then I see the guitar sound is co-engineered by Andy LaRoque, and one of the dudes is wearing my POSSESSED shirt. Oh boy! This is going to kill, right? Well, in my over-anxiousness, I neglected to notice that this band is called CHAINSAW, this demo’s called Into the Pit, and one of the songs is titled "Lobotomy of the Easter Bunny." Oh boy, indeed. This is, at best, beefed up, modernized Arena Metal bordering on Bar Rock, with an embarrassingly talentless singer. At ease, gentlemen. It appears that Swedish soil is also very capable of producing rotten crops. Now I have to go listen to POSSESSED. - 4 - <Jack>

CHAINSAW DISSECTION - Blood Gore and Grindcore · demo
One-man, beginner Death/Grind with a drum machine. A broke MORTICIAN, if you will. The ultra-raw bottom-heavy guitar sound, along with many of the riffs, has a real CELTIC FROST/HELLHAMMER quality that can’t be denied, but I really don’t see this material being highly sought after at this particular time. Maybe in a year or two. - 6.25 - <Jack>

CHALK - Dead World · Meathook
Self described as "Gorecore Rap." Fuck, what else must I endure? Oddly
enough some of this is sorta heavy, in a Sludgy kind of way, but they fuck it
up soon enough. I wouldn't want to be an expert on Rap, but I've heard enough
to know that these cartoony gore lyrics are very simple and weakly delivered.
I'd rather listen to the GETO BOYS. The addition of distorted bass does little
to help the situation. Even for a "novelty" band, this is terrible.

CHANNEL ZERO - Unsafe · Metal Blade
Oh how neat. And I had thought that ALICE IN CHAINS were already signed. Oh
wait! This is CHANNEL ZERO. Well, the singer is about 10 thousand times better
than that hillbilly from AIC. Golly, they even have some of those cool distorted
vocals! Maybe they borrowed the fx rig from PANZYTERA. - 4- <Ray> **MC9**
CHANT OF AGGRESS - Assisted Suicide · demo
This Midwest duo have a few good ideas, the album cover not being one of them. Scary masks, guys. I’m absolutely terrified. Surprisingly the music is a refreshing blend of MINISTRY and SLAYER with a decent Gothenburg-type scream. I like the melodic passage on "Hate Ate the Everything" (yeah, the song titles are a little dumb, too). Save for some experimental weirdness, bad sound, poor drum programming, and an overwhelming aura of unintelligence, CHANT OF AGGRESS aren’t really that bad. - 7 - <Jack>

CHAOSBREED - Brutal · Olympic / Century Media
This album is not aptly named. I would have gone with Washed Up Members of
Bands that Sold Out Over a Decade Ago Trying to Cash in on a Popularity Resurgence
in the Style They Were Once So Quick to Abandon. But that's just what I
would've gone with. My apologies to the former members of AMORPHIS and SENTENCED
involved with this too-little-too-late Death Metal peace offering, but unfortunately,
god forgives... I don't. - 2 - <Jack>
CHAOTIC GRINDER - Why? · DEMO
The song titles show a political/ environmental stance, which is by far the
best part of this. This music appears to be other band's songs, with the needle
just dropped to random places on the vinyl. I don't even claim to understand
this one, but maybe it's a mistake (or a joke?). - 1 - <Ray> **MC8**
CHAPEL OF THE EYE - Chapel of the Eye · DEMO
I think that these guys want to be SOLITUDE AETURNUS, which is fine with me.
At least not ten thousand other bands are already trying to emulate them. Their
songs are not as complex, and for the most part not as heavy or interesting,
either. But that isn't the end of the world, as they are sorta memorable. The
thing that I don't like is when the singer, who sometimes sounds great, gets
a little off key, off time, or just off. I think they just need a little more
time to develop. - 7.75- <Ray> **MC9**
CHARNEL HOUSE - Haunted Heaven · DEMO
Ok, take some throaty Hardcore vocals, and put 'em over something like RIGOR
MORTIS. That is kind of the sound CHARNEL HOUSE have. Their songs are also really
memorable, thanks to the somewhat groovy riffs, and terrific drumming. It's
a fairly original style, which is hard enough to have these days, and do an
excellent job. I'm looking forward to hearing more from them. - 8.75- <Ray>
**MC9**
CHARON - Sorrowborn · Diehard
I was expecting another TYPE O clone. Not even close. They may have a similar
subject matter and excellent recording quality, but CHARON has a refreshing
new angle on it, and is full of musical imagery and a pleasure to listen to.
I'll be there if they ever tour the U.S. and look forward to the next album.
- 9.5 - <Charon> **MC12**
CHASM - As You Fall · DEMO (CD)
This is super well produced and CHASM certainly know how to play their instruments,
but this kind of "mainstream Metal" puts me to sleep. The intensity
just isn't there, especially in the vocals. Fans of newer METALLICA would probably
think this is pretty heavy. Although they'd be unable to read any of this, since
I've had this issue specially treated to detect such dorks and burn at their
touch. - 5 - <Ray> **MC11**
THE CHASM - From the Lost Years... · The Art / Reborn
Mournful, suicidal dirges give way to bursts of DISSECTION-like technical speed,
or complex acoustic passages. Anguished screams rip their way to the surface,
and tortured whispers lurk in the shadows. The decimation is absolute. - 9.5

THE CHASM - Procession to the Infraworld · Dwell
Oh Hell yes! Combining elements of Doom and Thrash into their traditional speedy
Death Metal, THE CHASM stands on the brink of perfection. - 9.5 - <Ray>
CHASTAIN - Sick Society · Leviathan
Their press release really plays up the fact that new singer, Kate French, is
a mega-babe, so I was pretty sure that must mean that this would suck. Then
I noticed that Dennis Lesh is their new skin basher. Well, I always liked STYGIAN,
so I gave this a shot. I was immediately shocked by the raw guitar sound. Most
guitar "heroes" have a fairly clean tone, but David's guitar sound
is sick and filthy. Kate's voice sort of makes CHASTAIN sound like FEAR OF GOD,
in the way that she (sometimes) multi-tracks her vocals, although these guys
are not as heavy, or interesting. Not bad, but really nothing too special. It's
be fun to see them live though, I'd bet. - 7.75- <Ray> **MC9**
CHASTAIN - In Dementia · Leviathan (USA)
Kate's vocals have turned into a raspy Blues/Hard Rock wail, and sometimes the
music also seems more in that style, too, rather than the expected light Thrash
/ Metal. The guitar sound is still thick and meaty, but when it is at it's heaviest,
Kate seems to always have to try to prove what a tough chick she is, and doesn't
pull it off too well. - 7.5 - <Ray> **MC11**
CHEMLAB - Burnout at the Hydrogen Bar · Fifth Column /
Metal Blade
Hey, this is really good. I wasn't sure what to expect from CHEMLAB, but what
I found was an Industrial band in much the same vein as MINISTRY. Sometimes
a little too weird, but mostly right on target. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC8**
CHILDREN OF BODOM - Something Wild · Nuclear Blast
Symphonic and energetic Black Metal. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC11** - "Last

CHILDREN OF BODOM - Hatebreeder · Nuclear Blast
Interesting. New-wave Black Metal screechy vocals, expertly played Thrash, and
loud keyboards - but not the usual "symphonic" kind you would expect.
Hard to describe, but very nicely done, and well worth a listen. - 9 - <Ray>
**MC12**
CHILDREN OF BODOM - Follow the Reaper · Nuclear Blast
Pretty Euro Thrash with Black Metal KREATOR vocals and lots of (often dorky)
keyboards. It's very precise and well played, but although there is a lot to
like about this, it just seems kind of sterile, I suppose. And the WASP cover,
which should be raw, is so slick and exact that it's sterilized and has lost
all power and interest (believe me, I've listened to the original recording
of "Hellion" enough). - 7.75 - <Ray>
CHILDREN OF BODOM - Hate Crew Deathroll · Century Media

CHINCHILLA - Madness · Metal Blade
It's difficult for me to take a band seriously when they are named something
is stupid as "CHINCHILLA." I mean, this band thought it would be a
good idea to name themselves after a little mouse-like animal. At least pick
a tough rodent! But, then again, I suppose that the name does fit. The members
of CHINCHILLA are all good at what they do (Power Metal), but it's all so wimpy
and sugary that I almost went into a coma. And I'm not a fan of lyrics such
as "Yeah, yeah, yeah." They cover the ancient KISS chestnut "I
Stole Your Love" (inserting some double-bass drum action), and while fairly
close, the original is actually heavier. So, that really should tell the whole
story. - 7 - <Ray>
NOAM
CHOMSKY - Propaganda and Control of the Public Mind · AK Press
/ Alternative Tentacles
This 2-disc spoken word set is absolutely mandatory listening. The title tells
you all you need to know, other than that Mr. Chomsky is an eloquent speaker
who does an outstanding job delivering his points in an easy to understand way.
And what he says should leave you thinking - and possibly pretty shaken up.
- 10 - <Ray> **MC12**
NOAM CHOMSKY - Case Study In Hypocrisy · AK Press/Alternative
Tentacles
You know, I really should stop listening to this guy. Ignorance is bliss and
every time I listen to Noam Chomsky, I get a little smarter and a lot more cynical
and depressed. If you are a patriot and believe firmly in the fact that USA
is a good and just nation, then you'll want to avoid this, and other pieces
of Mr. Chomsky's spoken word and written material, as if it were the plague.
Like his previous albums, this is a whole lot like listening to a lecture from
a university political science class. It's some pretty heavy stuff and all of
it bashes the USA. The purpose of this CD is to make you think for yourself
and to not trust everything the government tells you to believe. If you listen
to this and can still honestly say that you believe the US government is kind,
just and truthful, then I want the drugs you're on. - 9.5 - <Ychoril>
CHRIST AGONY - Trilogy · Pagan
Once again, Poland's CHRIST AGONY return to pummel the ears of their listeners
with some new material! This CD is a killer, much in the vein of countrymen
VADER - if you like VADER, you'll like CHRIST AGONY. Unlike their last release
(which was pretty much a solo album by Cezar), this album has real drums, not
the drum machine that was used previously. Also gone are the Techno/Industrial
beats that popped up here and there on Darkside. As an added bonus, on
top of the 7 new trax, the band's Epitaph of Christ demo is included
for a grand total of 11 trax!! But is it me, or does the cover art of this album
remind you of The Ultimate Incantation? - 9 - <Ychoril> **MC12**
CHRONIC BLACK - Something for the Sick · DEMO
Interesting and heavy Death Metal, with a good, thick production. I must, however,
wonder about the lyrics (which are not included, and I can't really make out),
when a song is called "Blood Puddle (With a Lump in It)." - 8.25-
<Ray> **MC9**
CHRONIC DISORDER - Chronic Disprder · DEMO
Everything here could use a little work (example: The repetition in the lyrics
could be removed). This is okay Deathrash, but I hear better all the time. The
cover of CHEECH & CHONG's "Earache My Eye" is pretty funny. -
7 - <Ray> **MC8**
CHUM - Dead to the World · Metal Blade
On first listen, this seems to be yet another Groove Metal album, but there
is a bit more going on than that. Hints of a broader range of styles show up
- the most obvious being their sludgy cover of PRINCE's "Darling Nikki"
- and that has given CHUM the necessary depth to rise a bit above. - 8.25 -
<Ray> **MC10**
CHUPACABRA - Chupacabra · DEMO
When they slow down a little and the keyboards come to the front, this is cool.
But most of the time it's playing the same riff over and over with very simple
drums behind it. Even with songs this short, you need to hold the listener's
attention for more than 3 seconds at a time. - 6.75 - <Ray> **MC11**
CHURCH BIZARRE - Church Bizarre · DEMO (CD)
I'll have to take their word that this is available on CD, since I got sent
a dubbed tape. As a note to all bands and labels worldwide, if you want me (or
anyone else) to review your stuff, you might consider actually sending the real
thing, so that I can comment on how cool the packaging is, how great it is that
you were smart enough to print the lyrics so I can sing along, and just so that
I can see what the buying public will get if they choose to burn their cash
on your release. Not that anyone would ever want to spend a cent on this particular
bullshit, though. I can't believe that people actually think anyone will give
a damn when they buy a $3 keyboard, and try to make "dark" synth music.
Their "press release" says something about "bone crushing, heavy
riffs," but I don't even hear a guitar at all. Maybe they mean these "heavy"
keyboard riffs! The samples are kind of funny, though. But not enough to ever
listen to this again. - 2.25 - <Ray> **MC12**
CHURCH OF MISERY / SHEAVY - Born Too Late · Game Two
Man, if only SABBATH could collect royalties from all the acts that are ripping
them off these days, the ol' SABs could probably afford yet more trips to rehab.
This split CD features two bands who would obviously give pints of their own
blood to be BLACK SABBATH in their heyday circa '74. CHURCH OF MISERY relies
on sludgy riffs and a bass heavy production to get their point across, while
SHEAVY opted for a live recording and a singer who sounds exactly like Ozzy.
While both these bands are tight and well rehearsed, my advice would be for
SHEAVY's vocalist to join CHURCH OF MISERY, thus forming the ultimate BLACK
SABBATH tribute band. Somehow I doubt that this release will generate the cash
necessary to build the time machine both these bands so desperately want. -

CIANIDE - Second Life · DEMO
Slow Death. Slow, heavy Death. This 3 piece band more than makes up for
their lack of speed with heaviness. Mike's vocals are also heavy and raw. It's
almost impossible to understand the lyrics, but I'll bet they're mean. The production
is really good and this is a professional looking package. Musically, I am reminded
of AUTOPSY or a slower EXMORTIS. Second Life is impressive from the intro
before the first song, all the way to the very end. Everything here fits together
well and this is definitely worth checking out. - 8.5 - <Ray> **MC6**
CIANIDE - The Dying Truth · Grindcore
Heavy, Doom-laden riffs. Completely raw (I mean it!) vocals. This album is a
(mostly) slow Death showpiece. But for some reason, I still like the track "Funeral"
the best (it's an old track). The production is kinda weird: the drums are a
little loud, but that's not such a major concern. Oh yeah, the SLAUGHTER they
credit for inspiration is the original Death Metal band from Canada. If you
didn't know that, where have you been? Anyway, this is cool, so check it out.
- 8.5 - <Ray> **MC7**
CIANIDE
- A Descent Into Hell · Red Light
I just even don't know where to begin with this review. This is such an incredible
album that nothing I say will do it justice. They pay their respects to VENOM
and Godzilla, and even cover SLAUGHTER's "Death Dealer." This album
is truly awesome. The sound is unbelievably heavy - it's just beyond words.
CIANIDE normally keep things at a fairly slow tempo, and that only adds to the
crushing feeling. A Descent Into Hell is one of the greatest Death Metal
albums ever recorded - a classic in every sense of the word. Anyone who does
not own this album should be killed on sight. - 10 - <Ray> **MC9**
CIANIDE
- Rage War 1996 · DEMO
CIANIDE have always held their ground, never giving in inch to any of the various
trends to come and go in their nearly decade-long existence. They are, perhaps,
the most pure Death Metal band on earth [Well, there's DECEASED and some others.
-Ed.]. For that alone I would support them, but there is of course more. This
demo sees the band trying out some faster tempos, thanks in part to their new
drummer, Andy. This is something I didn't think I'd be hearing from them, but
I've no complaints. In fact, this (somewhat) speedier material is some of their
best yet, which is saying a lot coming from me, and is every bit as agonizingly
heavy as anything they've done before, and Mike's vocals are still the absolute
definition of brutal. I tried as best I could to find even a single fault with
this demo, but simply put, there are none. Two of the five songs, "Metal
Never Bends" and "(We Are) The Doomed," are in the running for
the best Death Metal song of all time, right up there with anything you care
to mention. And the other three are not far behind. Since my memory is not exactly
known to be perfect, I will not say that this is the best demo I've ever heard,
but I can't think of a better one at the moment. I could write about ten thousand
more words about this masterpiece, but suffice to say that of everything reviewed
in this issue, get this first. - 10 - <Ray> **MC10**
CIANIDE
- Death, Doom and Destruction · Lost Horizon
Longtime readers of Metal Curse know already that this album was destined to
get a perfect rating. CIANIDE have proven, time and time again that they are
the ultimate Death Metal band. They understand that their heavier-than-Godzilla
songs must also be memorable, and they deliver on that in spades. This album,
like their latest demo (Rage War 1996), is a occasionally a little faster than
they have been in the past, but it is executed flawlessly, and seems to have
only made them better. All bands should be required to listen to this album
(and a select few others) to hear how it should be done. "Destroying the
trends / Killing the false ones dead! / Headbanging 'til the end / METAL NEVER
BENDS!" If that doesn't deserve a ten, nothing does. Buy this and support
CIANIDE or I'll fucking murder you (it's not the band's fault that some idiot
got the song order wrong when he did the layout). - 10 - <Ray> **MC11**
CIANIDE
- Promo 1998 · DEMO (CD)
I'm always extremely glad to see any new material from CIANIDE. These three
songs see them continuing to explore their faster side. In the past, they had
been the heaviest of the slow Death kings, and now they are simply masters of
all tempos. CIANIDE prove once again with this flawless release that not only
are they the best Death Metal band in Chicago, but that they belong alongside
the very elite of the entire world. If you pass this up, you're a fucking idiot
and must be killed. - 10 - <Ray> **MC12**
CIANIDE - The Truth 7" · Lost Horizon
CIANIDE don't do too many covers, but Paul Speckman's DEATH STRIKE now stand
beside the true SLAUGHTER on this short list. It goes without saying that CIANIDE
do "The Truth" justice, and it seems natural to hear them play it.
And on the second side of this monsterpiece is their rerecorded version of the
title track of their first album, The Dying Truth. It's not as thick
sounding as the ultra-sludgy original version. The crisper guitar sound and
different drumming have altered the track to fit in more exactly with the band's
current, speedier, sound / style. It would be hard to say which version I like
more, but I am more used to hearing the old one... In any case, whenever you
can get any new material from CIANIDE, you'd better jump on it. - 9.5 - <Ray>
**MC12**
CIANIDE - Divide and Conquer · Merciless
Is it even possible for CIANIDE to make a less than perfect album anymore? Okay,
I have to admit that I suppose I am a little biased. I mean, I've known CIANIDE
for a decade, and I also did the layout for the CD version of this album. But
these things aside, Divide and Conquer will absolutely kick your ass
from beginning to end. Always a band to concentrate on awesome riffs, with this
new album, CIANIDE has delivered a flawless catalog of memorable brutality.
And also a textbook example of good (evil) old Death Metal perfection. It's
no surprise if you've ever read any Metal Curse back issues that the
new CIANIDE album would get a ten, but they might very well be the first band
to ever deliver three flawless albums in a row. - 10 - <Ray>
CIBORIUM - Colossal Crags · Independent
CIBORIUM sound really good. They occasionally have loud keyboards, and somewhat
Thrashy Black Metal as far as the music goes, but the vocals are well within
the low, growly realms of Death. This is a combination I love. Admittedly, the
keyboards aren't right sometimes, sounding out of place, but that is very rare.
And the more I listen to these songs, the better they get. CIBORIUM have perfection
in them, as is evidenced in the flawless song "Catalepsy," and in
a lot of places throughout the others. Hopefully I'll be hearing more from these
guys soon. - 9 - <Ray> **MC12**
CINDER SKIN - Sunken · Crionic
Sludgy Industrial Noise. There are some distorted vocals buried in the mix.
I guess this is supposed to be experimental, and I know it was recorded very
low-tech, but I'm just not really too interested. - 6 - <Ray> **MC10**
CIRCLE OF DEAD CHILDREN - The Genocide Machine · Deathvomit
/ Necropolis
Brutal, noisy Death / Grind. When they're not trying to hard to be weird and
different, that is. Well, I think my review is now longer than the name of the
band, so my work here is done. - 8 - <Ray>
CIRCLE OF DUST - Brainchild · R.E.X.
When someone in a band is given credit for playing the Stick, you've got to
know the band will be good. Especially when it's an Industrial band. Musically
fairly heavy, and vocally diverse. An interesting release. - 8.75- <Ray>
**MC8**
CIRITH GORGOR - Onwards to the Spectral Defile · Osmose
Fast new wave Black Metal. I'm a little tempted to call this style Black Grind.
Anyway, since Osmose had already signed IMMORTAL, I'm not sure why they felt
the need to give these second-stringers a deal, too, but I guess they are pretty
good. I mean evil. - 8 - <Ray> **MC12**
CIVILIAN - ci·vil·ian · DEMO
Very repetitive, irritating, baby-level Industrial. In the two songs on here,
there is a combined total of 1 even semi-interesting idea. Maybe without the
horrible vocals, this would be tolerable, but I'm not sure about that. - 3.25
- <Ray> **MC9**
CLANDESTINE - Umarle Konie · DEMO
Majestic and very memorable Death Metal. - 9.5 - <Ray> **MC11** - "Last
Second Additions"
CLAWFINGER - Deaf Dumb Blind · Metal Blade
This album was made with "no guitar amps," but I'll tell you what,
there are a ton of guitar riffs on here. I'm not sure why, since some guys played
bass and drums, they didn't just have a guy play the guitar parts, too. Well,
anyway, on top of a bunch of guitar (somehow made without guitars), drums and
bass (some kinda Industrial-Thrash, I guess) is a guy rapping. I'll admit to
not exactly being an authority on Rap, but I really think that the reason why
guys like ICE CUBE are popular, is that their raps sound natural, not forced
and completely pre-thought-out, like they are here. This might be a good concept,
but I think the execution needs some serious work. - 7- <Ray> **MC9**
CLAWFINGER - Two Sides · TMC
Oh yeah, this is just what the world needed. As if their "New Metal"
wasn't an unlistenable enough abortion by itself, we're now treated to some
Dance / Industrial / Bullshit remixes, and a couple CD-ROM videos, too. Honestly,
I guess these guys suck a little less then most of their peers, but of course
that doesn't apply to these remixes. There are circumstances wherein I might
be able to listen to this, but not without considerable incentive. Like a winning
100 million dollar Powerball ticket. - 4 - <Ray>
ANDREW DICE CLAY - The Day the Laughter Died Part II ·
American
If you liked all the earlier Dice stuff, then you'll like this too. If not,
then this certainly won't change your mind. - 8 - <Ray> **MC8**
THE CLAY PEOPLE - The Clay People · Slipdisc
THE CLAY PEOPLE remind me of SECOND COMING (and most of you are probably wondering
who the fuck they are). This is radio-friendly music, but at least they don't
have the tough-guy attitude. This has a Metal edge to it, and would probably
get a better review in the magazine with the same title. Apparently this band
has been around for more than a decade and claim that they have a more organic
approach to songwriting (because they don't use sequencers anymore). What a
bullshit idea! Organic songwriting would be pulling weeds or slapping the Hell
out of trees with drumsticks. - 4.25 - <Quade> **MC12**
CLAYMORE - Released · demo
I’ll be honest, I didn’t really have much interest in this 5-song demo/CDR until I saw the band mentioned in the thanks list on the new RED CHORD album. What handy little marketing tools thanks lists are. Well, these guys aren’t bad. I am actually reminded of newer VARATHRON of all things. Melodic, adventurous Black/Death showcasing a ton of musical talent, especially in the keyboard department. Great drumming, decent riffs, and the vocalist even sounds like Necroabyssious. All I would change, other than the poor production, is the gay Celtic harmonies that everyone seems to be using nowadays. Or maybe they’re supposed to be Irish, Scottish, Finnish, or whatever fucking kind of traditional Folk-sounding bullshit you can think of. The bottom line is that if it sounds like an Irish Spring commercial or makes me envision men in kilts, it’s not cool, it has no place in Metal, and I don’t want any part of it. It’s fucking 2005, get with the god damn program! - 7.5 - <Jack>

CLERIC - s/t · demo
This band’s only virtue is the ability to deliver crushing breakdowns. Everything else is a mess. "Truth" is clusterfuck Noisecore nonsense to appease the Tech Metal geeks, while "El Camaron" has a sickening, groove-laden Nu-Metal ballad feel, but admittedly, the clean vocals aren’t bad. The third track is intermission filler, and "Draw [a] Robot" is a closing amalgam of all their schizophrenic parts. As I said, the one thing that keeps me listening is the breakdowns. They are fucking monsters in league with THROWDOWN or ON BROKEN WINGS. The vocals are solid throughout, as well, I should mention. Once they shed their incessant need to fuck around, they’ll really be dealing. - 8.25 - <Jack>

CLOT - Septic Tank of Human Thoughts · DEMO
The production is good, and the music is brutal Death. Vocals are really raw.
Hey the songs are even kinda memorable, and very well played. Even the lyrics
are pretty cool. I'd keep my eye on these guys. - 8.75- <Ray> **MC8**
CLOTTED SYMMETRICAL SEXUAL ORGAN - Nagro Lauxes VIII ·Morbid
I was wondering when I'd hear some Japanese onslaughts that weren't of an explicitly
Noise-related school. Artists like the BOREDOMS, KEIJI HAINO, and MERZBOW have
long been favorites in my underground lair, but until now, only the mighty and
mystical SIGH have represented the Jap Metal scene. Now that's all changed with
the deadly attack that these freaks have unleashed on my poor brain. 20 songs
in 38 minutes, richly textured and intense, kinda like BRUTAL TRUTH in style,
but maybe even better. - 9.5 - <J.J.> **MC10**
CLUTCH - Passive Restraints EP · Earache/ Relativity
Three songs of aggressive, HELMET style, uhh, Metal, I guess. Really not too
bad, but certainly not too different from what Hardcore did all those years
ago. So for as new as some people might think this sound is, it's actually fairly
dated. Of course, that doesn't make it bad. I only want everyone to understand
that these guys are no trend setters. - 7.75- <Ray> **MC8**
CLUTCH - Clutch · EastWest / Atlantic
Out goes whatever heaviness and aggression CLUTCH ever had, and in comes all
the bad parts of a half-assed FAITH NO MORE tribute band. Pathetic. - 4- <Ray>

COAL CHAMBER - Demo 1996 · DEMO
Regular readers of Metal Curse know how much I despise so-called "Hard"
Alternative bands. Even if I loved them, I'd fucking hate COAL CHAMBER's pathetic
derivative bullshit. Half-assed WHITE ZOMBIE cover bands would make fun of this
crap. - 1 - <Ray> **MC10**
COAL CHAMBER - Coal Chamber · Roadrunner
Well, I utterly hated their demo (see above), so it's no surprise that Roadrunner
would sign them. What the fuck is going on with labels signing bands like this?
In case you don't feel like locating the demo review in this endless sea of
words, these guys sound like a WHITE ZOMBIE cover band that decided to attempt
to write some songs, and completely failed at it, but was given a contract anyway.
Add another disc to my pile for backyard Tron games. - 1 - <Ray> **MC10**
COALITION - Coalition · DEMO (CD)
These guys are great musicians, but who cares when their Hardcore Lite is just
less filling? - 7 - <Ray> **MC11**
COALITION - All Purpose Grind · DEMO (CD)
I guess this deceptively named disc this is better than their self-titled demo-CD,
but it just doesn't seem to have the necessary intensity for Hardcore, if that's
what they're trying for. It seems really bland and sort of halfhearted, no matter
what you'd call it. - 7.25 - <Ray> **MC12**
COARSE - Downwards · DEMO
This sounds like what I might have expected METALLICA to be like by now, if
they still had one testicle between the lot of them. But that's still pretty
wimpy, and more than a little influenced by "Hard" Alternative. I
can't really tolerate much of this crap. - 6 - <Ray> **MC11**
COCKNOOSE - Badmen, Butchers, and Bleeders · Baloney Shrapnel
This is the trashy, redneck side of Punk Rock. They play it well, and their
songs are sort of catchy, and certainly full of energy. They cover an ancient
AC/DC song, and seem to be in league with Satan. - 8 - <Ray> **MC9**
CODE BLACK - Penetration · Arctic
This might be the worst singer I've ever heard. He sounds like Phil Anselmo
and Tom G. Warrior colliding in their respective Glam phases. The lyrics are
severely unintelligent, and the music might have been considered heavy and groundbreaking
in 1985. Bloodless, lifeless Thrash-by-the-numbers. - 1 - <Jack>
CODESEVEN - Division of Labor EP · The Music Cartel
This has some Thrashy elements and screamed vox, but also some mellow parts
and "nice" vox. Apparently this is supposed to be considered Hardcore,
but I really didn't get that out of it. Their press release claims that CODESEVEN
"began life as a Death Metal Punk band." I wonder what that's supposed
to mean... Still, whatever you'd call this style, it's not bad. Not great, though,
by any means. - 7.75 - <Ray> **MC12**
COFFIN TEXTS - Gods of Creation, Death & Afterlife ·
Dwell Records
This is some really good "old-school" sounding Death Metal. Bands
like IMMOLATION, BOLT THROWER, and MORBID ANGEL come to mind. The songs for
the most part stay in the mid-paced range. There are moments, however, where
they stomp on the accelerator. There are also some fairly impressive displays
of technicality. The lyrical content resembles that of NILE in that they incorporate
ancient Egyptian themes. This makes the album that much more interesting. Some
serious thought went into both the lyrics and the song-writing. The album finishes
off with respectable covers of SLAYER's "Crypts of Eternity" and "Disturbing
the Priest" by BLACK SABBATH. Gods of Creation, Death & Afterlife
is solid and heavy from beginning to end. An excellent debut for COFFIN TEXTS.

COHERENT LIQUID FORM - New Existence · Archives
Very well played Death/Thrash with a ton of hooks and some occasional blasting. The vocalist has a piercing shriek of a snarl that, while intense, can become grating. The attempt seems to be somewhat in the vein of the Swedish Black Metal styles (MARDUK, DISSECTION), but not quite as smooth. With all the melody and groove utilized here, this really isn't that memorable. Still, a valiant effort, and it wouldn't surprise me if eventually these guys do become an awesome band. - 7.25 - <Jack>
COLD - Cold · A&M
Slightly "hard" "Alternative" run through a distortion unit.
- 1 - <Ray> **MC11** - "Last Second Additions"
COLD COLOURS - Somnium XIII · Root of All Evil
COLD COLOURS play a strange blend of Gothic / Industrial Metal. Try to imagine
FEAR FACTORY with heavy Goth overtones. This is just a little too weird for
me. I doubt the average Death / Black Metal fan would find anything of interest
here either. - 4.25 - <Painkiller>
COLD COLOURS - The Burden of Hope · Root of all Evil
I heard this is supposed to sound like HIM and the 69 EYES. Well, I’ve never heard 69 EYES (not gay), and the only time I’ve heard HIM was a cameo on a new BLOODHOUND GANG song that I thought sounded cool. This certainly does not sound cool. I actually dig where bands of this ilk come from lyrically, and the music here is a decent, albeit subdued Symphonic Metal with chunks of straightforward Rock. It’s these fucking cheeseball vocals, which sounds like a cross between Michael Bolton and the girls from NELSON, that fail to impress. I just don’t think I’ll be able to get into this seeing as how I was not born with the "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" gene found in most Caucasian males. - 3.75 - <Jack>
COLD MOURNING - Looking Forward to Reason · DEMO
These gentlemen play Doom the old fashioned way. That is to say, they sound
more like TROUBLE than CELESTIAL SEASON, and maybe more like what CATHEDRAL
want to sound like. I little too Groove laden to be very depressing, but categories
aside, this is a fine release. - 8.25- <Ray> **MC9**
COLD MOURNING / WHILE HEAVEN WEPT - (split) 7" ·
Game Two
Imagine an occasionally slower and heavier ST. VITUS, with angrier vocals, and
you're well on your way to COLD MOURNING. WHILE HEAVEN WEPT start off speedy
but quickly slow things down, nearly sounding like TYPE O NEGATIVE, thanks to
the deep vocals. Interesting release on see-through blue vinyl. - 9 - **MC11**
COLD MOURNING - Lower Than Low · Game Two
Heavy and Doomy in more or less the pre-Groove style of CATHEDRAL, COLD MOURNING
is a very good, but not awesome, band. That's hard for me to write, but it's
true. What's also true is that these guys are cool as Hell, and so is Game Two's
m
